added coolant, hair above the cold full line. let it run for 40 minutes and still have ice cold air.

Did you raise the rpm to 3k for 30sec?
There's a procedure to bleed air from the system.

So you had air in the system.  Wonder how that happened - you said the cooling system hasn't been opened, right?  That air got in there somehow.

No coolant flushes since the last time it was cold and needed heat?  Radiator hose changes?  New thermostat?  Nothing like that?

car has been in the garage for a month or two. nothing to do with the coolant system has been touched before or during that time.

i have no idea how it happened

I've heard of air entering the system through a bad head gasket but there would other signs if this was happening.

I purchased the car about a year and a half ago and  I have put about 4k miles on it. Haven't ever even opened the coolant resivoir up until the other day when I added coolant. I did bring it in to get the brake switch looked at and get an oil change so I don't see why they would have messed with the cooling system but it was a dealership so who knows .

For now it's fixed, if the problem arises again then  there must be  more to it. Here's to hoping there isn't  :beer2:
