2010 Taurus SHO engine failure @ 51k miles

So I decided to change the oil to full synthetic in the SHO today, although the dealer changed it about 1k ago. To my surprise, the picture below is what I found. Some of the pieces are sort of flat, some of the metal are long twisted pieces. Light almost aluminum in color, some have this color and brass/gold appearance. Thoughts? Car has 50,750 on it

UPDATE 8/13/13:

The car has been at Phil Long Ford in Colorado Springs getting "looked at". I just received a call saying I can come pick up the car. Per Ford policy, they do not trust that the oil I brought them came out of my SHO, so I need to drive the car for another 5,000 and they will change the oil and see if there are metal shavings in it. The service advisor let me know that if that had actually come out of my car, that would be grounds for a teardown. I am pretty pissed at this point.

What the hell??

Upon further inspection..

No mods at all. When I changed the oil, I switched to a full synthetic, that's it. They said that i can elect for a breakdown of the engine, bit if they find nothing, I have to pay for it. Should I just go ahead and have them do it as this amount and size of metal is obvious grounds for a teardown? What would y'all do?

Thanks

Ask for it in writing, everything. If they say to drive it and bring it back make sure your RO has everything on it. I'd drive it if it were mine. I have 5yr 60k powertrain so I'd beat on it. If it breaks make sure it really breaks so the can't fix it! Get a new engine and keep on trucking!

Also to add: I would tell them to change the oil again. I know it sux to have wasted $ on new oil but make it a point for them to put there oil in it and go drive it. If it fails on the road they were the last ones to work on it so Ford will pay the tow.

You should pay 80-100$ and have an oil analysis done, the kind that include microscoping the contaminants. They should be able to tell you want kind of debris it is and where they came from.

The brass color shavings would lead me to believe that you are looking a pieces of the bearing/bushing that the piston pins go through. I believe that this would be the only area of the engine assembly that has brass bushing bearings, unless there are some brass wear parts in the VCT system that could be failing. I believe that the main and rod bearings are silver in color, but I could be mistaken. You should do a compression test on each cylinder to determine if you have a loss in any one of the 6. I guess the turbos may have something that could be failing that is brass in color too. If the brass is coming from your rods, that probably means that there is piston movement of some sort and that will usually be catastrophic. About 2 weeks ago I brought my 2013 SHO to the dealership to have a vib checked and also have the oil changed. When I walked in the back the first thing I noticed what that the tech was putting 5w-20 full synthetic when the 2013's call for 5w-30. You did say that the last person to change the oil was your dealer, so you may want to go look at your invoice to see what oil type was actually used. If you don't trust the invoice, you can have the oil checked to see what viscosity it actually is. But, if the engine is under warranty, blow it up and let them change it. You are probably better off letting it grenade because then they will have to change the entire short or long block vs. changing only the failed parts.

I've never seen any thing like this before, even on motors with broken pistons. If the engine was new, I'd assume its machine cuttings. I don't believe our rods have bronze wrist pin bearings, but rod shell and main shells have bronze cores coated with a powered metal.

I agree with the comments about getting the oil tested. Also, when you finish the Ford "Test" and they drain the oil, stand next to the tech and get a sample of that oil. Make the tech initial and date the label on the sample container, and have it tested, if they tell you no problems were discovered. At that point you are very close to end of warranty.

I find it hard to believe the dealership is not standing behind you and questions your honesty, along with Ford, as to the origins of the oil.

Thank y'all for the replies and advice, its greatly appreciated.

Yes, I am totally pissed that they won't "accept" the oil as a legit sample. I'm just banking on the engine grenading. I'll go ahead and see if they recommend changing the oil again. If not, I will get their recommendation in writing like mentioned above. J am picking the car up at lunch today. I will go ahead and take a stab at talking to the fixed operations manager (back of the house) and see what he says.

Took delivery of the car this afternoon. Ford decided to do some cosmetic modifications to my front right wheel also!

WOW! Dude, that confirms that the dealership is crap. After getting a new set of wheels I would move on to a different dealer. Are there more dealers by you?

Sorry for your misfortune, Im interested to see how this turns out - but even more so to see how they handle failures on tuned vehicles :)

^^I am baffled.

Yeah car is 100% stock. The manager called me back about an hour later after talking with their insurance or whoever it is that is responsible for repairs. He said that they are going to go ahead and eat the cost on buying a new wheel for the car. He was real polite, thanked me for serving the country and said that's the least they could do. In 500 miles, he recommended bring the car in the drain and inspect the oil, cut the oil filter open and use a bore scope to check out the bottom of the drain pan for additional and/or bigger metal pieces. Kudos to him, kind of sad it took talking to the manager to fix the problem though. Those service advisors are robots.

I am glad they are stepping up.  Hopefully, an end to your problem is in sight.
