Last night I was just finishing up the last 50 miles of a 350 mile trip home in my 2013 Taurus SHO PP with 45,970.6 miles on the clock (No Mods), when I started hearing and feeling a severe driveshaft speed vibration under acceleration. For the remainder of the trip home I randomly accelerated to try and pinpoint the vibration and determine if it was engine, transmission, or bearing related. As I approached the end trip and usual interstate exit I slowed to a stop and then decided to accelerate with about half throttle to see how the vibration is at low vehicle speeds. When the car got to about 20-25 MPH I heard and felt a pop, the engine RPM instantaneously revved freely, followed by a wheel speed metal on metal chanky chank noise as my car slowed to an idle speed roll. After that, I believe the only thing propelling my car was the rear drive unit, which might I add would only stay engaged to about 1000 rpm due to the PTU’s electronic protection system. So needless to say, I coasted at idle speed the remaining .1 to .2 miles home assumedly using the car’s rear drive system. Currently, when I give the car gas the engine revs freely, the transmission shifts through the gears, and the speedometer climbs as if there is nothing wrong. There are no check engine lights and no other signs of an issue, other than the car not moving under its own power. I recorded a video and uploaded it to youtube, which I will post the link to shortly, to show what the car is doing. It seems that the front drive system spider gear has exploded, leaving the car with NO power to the front wheels. The car will be towed to Ford Service today to diagnose and repair the issue.
