INTAKE QUESTIONS-- AGAIN I KNOW!

OK.. I have searched and looked at all types of "CAI" intakes.. all I want is sound and bling effect. I know the power adding is meh! but...
now.. is the FLEX, EXPLORER SPORT, and SHO all the same?? I find different listings for all vehicles, then 2 the same and one different and 2 of another the same and one different.. confusing!!
reason being I came across INJEN.. and they have one for the flex and explorer sport.. yet they are different.. can either be put on the sho? i did see one guy on here put the explorer sport intake on from Injen.. the flex one looks different.. anyone!! question make sense!!

Gonna buy one this week for SURE.. windows getting tinted today.

The Flex one seems to be on a non-EB engine, the XSport on an EB engine, from the product description.  The Flex one looks like it might even fit my Edge intake!
 
Yes, the Flex one is not going to work on the SHO.  The XSport one might.
 
I have a Typhoon.  I might be getting the tube powder coated. I am still seeing them for $205 here and there.
 
Just a quick point, it looks like the intake tube on the Injen is metal, which could cause a heat problem in warmer weather.  I know the AirForce One I had on my F-150 had a stainless tube, and it got really warm during the warmer months.
 
Heat saturation could be a problem, especially sitting still.  The problem is that plastic fabrication is very expensive compared to developing in metal.  I'm thinking of trying a thermal coating on the new one being developed. Hope to do under hood temps and intake air temp along with dynos before and after coating.... This is planned for stock except CAI.

It'll will be slow as I am having the DPs and HPs thermal coated now and plan the same measurements with each piece as install begins along with pre and post dynos... especially since we have seen performance drop with some rides.... reason is unclear.

The Thermal coating may not be better.  Time will tell, but hopefully this method should at least answer a few heat saturation questions about intake/turbo loops and exhaust as it relates to performance in the SHO.
 
Ive noticed the heat is incredible that comes off our shos. After running it hard you could almost cook egg on hood. Must have a good cooling system. I see why they got that big cooler in the later applications.

Will the thermal coating give it heat resistant properties?

If so could you post up who is doing it?

I'm going to do a second review of the K&N in cold weather shortly.
 
The metal pipes definitely cause intake heating in the SHO. I saw intake temps near 140 and when they get that high they never recover.

It doesn't matter how much better an intake flows if the air coming in is 1/2 as dense because its hot.

Sean... Yes it will give it heat resistant properties. I am using PPE and the same coating they are putting on my downpipes and hotpipes.  How much?  no one knows.  I'm working with Mike and Black Market Racing... We will be doing a "slow motion install" and measuring all the underhood temps (for the CAI being developed this will also include dynos stock vs CAI vs coated CAI).  So the process will take a while as you can imagine.  We hope to answer the temp questions as well as performance questions.

I love everything about the K&N except the summertime heat.

It would be awesome to find a solution, even if it means a different CAI design.

I have a guy in Antioch, IL that I will be talking with about the powder coating.  I planned on asking him if there was a heat resistant/insulating material that he might be able to use.  I'll write him now.

Sean...I did mean thermal coating... hope it works and Mike will then have a solution not only to more air, but denser air!  Also some real world answers to some questions I think we all have.  The dynos I reference will be done stock tune and the CAI will be the first one checked.  The we'll check it tuned to see how much improvement exists there...  The jury is still out of course.

I have heard that it would be ceramic coating.  This guy doesn't do it but his cousin does.  I may check back with him in the Spring.
 
Dumb question? The stock air box is sealed off and it helps to keep the heat off. Now the k&n and air raid cai is an open box and letting the heat from the engine absorb into the cai. How does this help the performance.

To me, just a drop in airfilter sealed up in the box would be a better choice. Just my thought

Check the downpipes thread linked below and read back a few postsalso...
There are a number of variables including time to heat saturation... 4DR and I will be testing these vaery things with temp and dyno..  We hope to have a real life answer to your question among others so we'll all be smarter :smartass:
