Rear Shocks

I am pretty sure my rear shocks are at the end of their lives. I noticed some fluid on my passenger side rear shock a while ago. I have about 64K on the car and was wondering how hard changing the rears is? Any tips of tricks? Should I use OEM or is there a aftermarket upgrade? I'm not really looking at doing coilovers.

They are pretty straight forward to replace. You have to flip down rear seats remove a few push pins to remove carpet to get rear towers to remove nut, and there is one bolt where it attaches to suspension. OEM as far as replacements is your only option.

Dang...really?
That is slightly aggravating...

Maybe you could get with Megan while they're interested in developing for the platform and get rear suspension components developed.

Does anyone have a part number? All of the sites I look at have the shocks but list "2WD". Is there a difference between the FWD and AWD cars, and a difference in the PP and non PP?

Monroe Sensatrac are great options for Gen I and Gen II SHO's.  They would handle the Eibach lowering springs however would not hold up to a more aggressive spring like Intrak.  I equate Intrak springs to our H&R springs.

I replaced the rear today. Pretty straight forward. The old ones were shot for sure. The passenger side had a hole in the shock body and lost all of the fluid.

did you use the Monroes or OEMs?

I ended up going with the PP spec front and rears despite having a non PP car, funny too I had a front d/s original strut blown right out when replaced.

Where did you purchase them from?

Was it a noticeable difference? (going from non-pp to pp shocks).

I originally went with Rockauto then, when I had the car up on the lift and went to replace the old units, I found they had sent me two of the same side front struts.  Given the box was marked from Ford with the correct number but the hardware wasn't accurate.  I ended up getting roped around for nearly ten days, so I ordered the strut from a local dealership.  As far as the difference, I changed to Eibach springs at the same time so there was a subtle improvement with handling sharpness.

I see these crap out pretty quickly.

What's the mileage these tend to fail?

Seems like they're overloaded from the factory. We all know the uselessness of a blown shock. But, they degradate as well in the thousands of miles prior to failure, with a coincidental drop in damping performance.
