Winter Tire Choice......Continental ExtremeContact DWS

After much thought and being torn between dedicated winter tires and all season tires, I finally pulled the trigger and went with the Continental ExtremeContact DWS @ 245/45R20. I just could not justify the high price and lack of warranty that came with the dedicated snow tires. I have a 70 mile round trip commute, but 90% of that is highway driving. I have never run snow tires and managed to get by the last two years with 275/315 on my Jeep SRT-8, so I think I will be fine.
On Monday I should get the tires/rims which will be 20" TSW Nurburgring in matte gun metal. This will allow me to keep the summer rubber on the OEM 20" rims.
Is there anyone out there in the snow belt that is running these tires that will put together a quick review?

My son has them on his Lesbian Car ( 05' Subaru Forrester Turbo stick)!!!!!  Hasn't had them in snow yet, but says they really drive & handle great! Ride much better than the stock tires and the second set which finally wore out.

Son-in-law had them on his Honda Accord.  Liked them better than original Michelin's, but had  pull to the left which was rectified by switching fronts early on.

My personal first choice would be Pilot A/S3 if available in right size.  Conti DWS would be second.  I would also bet the farm that you will get better mileage wear out of the DWS.  And.. most important, they are cheaper and reasonably priced for a great tire.

DWS tires are very good all seasons.  Had them on my Gen2 SHO for 5 years (till the car was totaled), through all kinds of weather, including deep snow (for MD) and ice.  If you drive sensibly, you should get great results.  Steering response is a bit "soft", that's about my only complaint.

That is my only complaint on DW summers too.  Didn't notice it that much until I got the Pilot SS.  Could be due to width, though TireRack ratings point out this as a less strong area.

I replaced the stockers on my old Flex with DWS's. Great tires all around

I've thoroughly enjoyed my Conti's thus far....

No matter the season, or the use (track or daily driven)....

Very happy with them. I suspect you will be as well. Good choice! :ok:

I have firestone winterforce on my 3.5L & I put better IMO Toyo Observe GSi5 on my Elantra. I'm wondering why you didn't go to a smaller wheel size to save some $$$$. I put 17s on my truck & 14s on my car. Save the $$$ to put more mods on them in the summer

I saw pictures of other SHO's with smaller rims and I was not a fan of the look.

It's winter. Pizza cutters are better than wide track. But in Canada, things are a wii bit different.
I am in Maine which is pretty much Canada and think at 245 width I will find a way to get by.

Living in Maine, would you not look at a true winter tire vs an all season tire?  Just curious on your thoughts.  My job may have me traveling to Cleveland, OH on a semi regular basis and I don't want to put crazy miles on the low mile lease F150 that I recently got.  I have a 2010 Fusion Sport (fwd) and I am considering winter tires and or selling it in and getting something AWD that gets good mileage (maybe a 2.0 EB Fusion) and getting winter tires for it.

The one sticking point I could not get past on the winter tires was the lack of any kind of warranty. I did not want to go out and cook a set of tires in 5,000 miles and then have to shell out another $1,400 to replace them. I have never run winter tires on any of my vehicles and find winter driving more than manageable, you just need to know the limits of your driving skills and the traction available.
By the way the tires just came in and they look better than expected. Nice blocky tread on the outer radius for snow grip. Just waiting on the rims now.

I've never had snow tires either and have never had an issue driving in adverse conditions.  Looking forward to your review of the new wheel/tire combo.

Collision avoidance skills are more critical today than ever, as, IMHO, the average driving skill level continues to drop.

It's the law. Insurance won't help you. Winter tires should not cook in the cooler temps. All seasons don't get soft in freezing weather. Looks aren't everything when you are in the ditch. Ya it pisses me off when people say they need their ride to look sweet in the winter. They are a very good driver. Blah blah blah. You never know & IMO I just like to be  prepared & ready.  Unless you live in Florida, nah who wants to live there. Just visit. I hope the peeps who rock all seasons don't get banged up. It sucks eH.

^^^^^If you read my first post you see that I drive 90% of the time on the highway. Commuting is easy enough on the highway that I almost considered running a CTS-V as my daily driver. We do get substantial storms where I live, but I guess the plowing and maintenance is good enough to not require winter tires. Are winter tires better in the snow and ice, yes. Are they needed to keep you out of a ditch, no. I have not once come up short in reaching my destination, even going back to the days of running all seasons on a RWD. And this is even with me chasing the big snow storms to the mountain to go skiing. I think it is just all based on what you are comfortable with.

Tires and rims came in yesterday. The tires actually look to be more aggressive than I anticipated. Hopefully will have them mounted tomorrow:
