2016 SHO / MKS mule

I wouldn't be so quick to rule out the 3.5 ecoboost.  I could see the base Taurus engine choices as the 2.3 4 cylinder or the 2.7 ecoboost.  If there is a SHO, it would have the 3.5.  I would almost bet money that you will see the MKS come standard with the 2.7 ecoboost and optional with the 3.5 ecoboost.

If they decide to do a Fusion sport model (ST?), there may not be a 2016 Taurus SHO at all.  That would be sad given the availability of a high powered Charger and the Chevy SS.  However, Ford doesn't always play in every category.  I am still pissed that they dropped the Ranger pickup and before that the Thunderbird!

I think it's a mistake to assume that the new Fusion-based Taurus is going to be significantly lighter than the current car.  An AWD V6 MKZ weighs 4,129 pounds.  Stretch it a bit, widen it a bit, throw on a couple of turbos, and some bigger wheels/tires, and its not unrealistic to assume the new Fusion/MKZ will pick up a couple of hundred pounds and weigh exactly what the current SHO weighs. It also won't have the current car's giant trunk.  The interior will be slightly roomier, but the current car is very comfortable and roomy, its just not quite as space efficient as the Fusion.  The small amount of extra passenger cabin capacity in the Fusion doesn't outweigh the current Taurus' massive trunk capacity for me. I suspect that if most people really took a long, unbiased look at how they actually use their car, they'd come to the same conclusion.

The current car is much maligned in the media (and by people on this forum) for being overweight.  It's not.  It pretty much weighs the same as any other comparably sized/equipped car.  This is an easily verifiable fact (Google is your friend), so I am baffled as to why so many people blindly proclaim the SHO to be overweight.

I'm staying neutral on this until the new Taurus hits the streets.  Until then, I'm skeptical that it will be anything more than an incremental improvement over the current car, if that.

Because the car weighs 4300lbs or so!?

A Fusion AWD 2L Ecoboost weighs in at 3700-800lbs...so I'm going to assume that the new SHO should be able to lose about 300lbs or so.

Maybe or maybe not.  Add the increased weight of the v6 over the 4cyl.  The additional weight of it actually being larger and it may have a slight decrease in weight.  I wouldn't conceded 300lbs though, maybe 100.

If they can drop 7 hundy from an F150, they can drop 4 from the Taurus.  Just because the Taurus has similar weight in its class doesn't mean its still not overweight.  Of course it is.  The 3.5 is such a volume engine I would be surprised if it wasn't carried over.  It's fun to talk about that's for sure.  I just hope its rattle free, good build quality with good mpg from a successful model point of view.

The issue is meeting the CAFE regs in the coming years...

That's like saying a 6'2" man who weighs 200 lbs is overweight because most people weigh less. A person (or car) can't be declared overweight without the context of size. The SHO is not overweight compared to other comparably sized/equipped cars.

The 4 cylinder EB Fusion is not a valid reference point for a future V6 twin turbo stretched/widened AWD Fusion based Taurus. The most comparable current car is the V6 AWD MKZ, which weighs only 300 lbs less than the current SHO. Unless Ford uses massive quantities of aluminum (ala the new F150), the logical conclusion is that the Fusion based Taurus will weigh close to the current
Taurus.

You can't use Lincoln as a real bench mark because of full glass roof and other improvements done to it to make it a Lincoln and weigh more then its Ford counter part. my figures are from a AWD Fusion with the Ecoboost 2L.

Let's also not forget the fact that the next Gen Taurus will be smaller overall by a little bit then the current car, which should help with weight.

Another example I can think of is the BMW 3 and 1 series. The 1 series is only 100lbs or so lighter then the 3 series its based on, even though it's a shorter/smaller car.

Then add in Ford needing/wanting to cut weight through using aluminum or stronger but thinner steel, there is going to be some weight savings in the upcoming car because they need too.

Dang. Hollow Man behind the wheel.
And what the heck is that red button on the dash? Seat eject?

The interior looks quite nice.

Thought the same thing, bet it's just a pad. Looks like a fusion with the c pillar and mirrors.
