After installing a catch can...

Good afternoon,

I have read discussions on which catch can to use, how to install, what they do, etc.

What I have not seen and makes me curious is that on my car I have the black soot on the exhaust tips, which as far as I know is due to not having a catch can. When I install one, the soot should stop making it that far. But what happens to that nasty black residue that has already been in there? How do you clean it? I know I can wipe the tips clean, have done it several times on the 1k miles I have put on the car. Am talking about the soot inside the exhaust, in the intake and wherever else it might be. Will it burn away after a while? I've read meth injection will clean that, but that is something I might not get, at least not anytime soon. Is this something I should even worry about once a catch can is installed?

Thanks for the input.

These cars run rich with the stock calibration, that's the cause of the soot.
I run a catch can and I still get a little soot.

GDI tech is based in diesel technology.  Diesel and Soot have long gone hand in hand.  Maybe we need those DPFs/urea injectors too LOL.

I have a catch can, and I'm tuned (less rich than OE). I also run premium fuel and high quality synthetic oil.

My exhaust tips are black after 1000 mi or so. Some soap/water and a sponge are how I clean mine. I polish them once in a while, which helps ease removal.

The moisture in the exhaust during winter months almost steam cleans them, and I can just wipe them out occasionally with a paper towel - not so much the other 3 seasons.

please don't say dpf too loud, they might hear you.

Regen would come on every 70-80 miles on the truck I had, regardless of what type of driving I did.

As others have said, its pretty common on this platform. My 2015 SHO PP had it (though I blacked everything out, including the tips, so it wasnt an issue for me at all).

My dads 2011 F150 ecoboost has it as well. AND my 2015 Fusion Titanium 2.0L Ecoboost has it as well (and its way more annoying than the SHO due to the shape of the exhaust tips - it coats the center, and leaves the edges chrome, atleast on the SHO it is a uniform covering).

You can keep the tips polished up and you should be golden.
