Airaid

I got it from autoanything.com.  I will try to snap a photo this weekend.  Honestly what I like the most about is the BOV sound and overall sound.  Might be a little noisy for some.
Is this it?

No, the hole for the sensor is on the wrong side.

I took mine off and put the stock piece back on.

K&N heat soaks like that's its job.  Past a certain point, it will not recover.

As far as heat sink on my Flex.... I found that it was better to keep Flex idling (running) with hood up, while in line waiting up to an hour to run the strip.

Much less heat sink!  The numbers don't lie....

Maybe you need to power vent the hood like Porsches power deploy their spoilers!  Put in BPD-style vents, but thermostatically/manually controlled.

I am drilling an 8" hole in my hood and using some heating pipe for a fantastic "home-made" scoop.  In honor of BPD I am painting it white!

Painting it white, whether in my honor, or not.....

I can tell 'ya, it oughta match your Flex's roof pretty well! :ok:

And i thought some of the visual things i did where over the top, this would be way over. Ford did such a good job on wheel wells hard to grab any air except where ford meant it to come in from. one advantage of either CAI is the straight piping, the reg aircleaner piping is accordian like which supposedly creates turbulance & less air to engine. As someone posted awhile back CAI, if nothing else is eye candy & as a show judge & showing my SHO, it's a must have or you lose points in the judges mind.

When I first installed my custom CAI (before AirAid or any kits were available), I posted on Flex Net that I had created Visual Fluff... Commented that I probably hadn't created any HP, but I thought it looked good.  Had one guy who made a BIG deal of telling me that I was wrong about HP gains that I never even suggested...  In my opinion, the only possible gains with a CAI on a turbo engine is if you can get cooler and unrestricted air flow to the "sucking" turbos.  Any gains are relative to the job Ford or any other MFG has done in providing that air.  The AirAid CAI for our cars is real "eye candy", but after installing one and seeing the hotter IAT temps and the longer heat sink times, I promptly pulled it off and sold it. Went back to my own.

Bob, I wonder if you having your top cover off helps. The Typhoon puts to cone at the fender in the SHO but its still a no go. Is the pipe on your custom job plastic or metal?

Looks great though.  Similar to the Hennessey CAI piping.  Darreli has that and claims it really doesn't help much.  Perhaps he can chime in.

For those who asked, yes, mine is the K&N Typhoon and I also have the prefilter.  I can tell you that after driving it hard, the metal tube usually  still not hot, even though the engine is hot.  As stated earlier I am a complete novice on this stuff so i have no idea what difference that makes - except when I touch exposed metal in a hot engine, I am expecting it to be hot.  I concur that the Airaid is just eye candy, and likewise, only get the K&N if you like to hear your car sucking air and hissing like a crazed animal.  If there are any performance gains under certain conditions, consider it icing on the cake.

p.s. You can control (eliminate)the sucking air sound and BOV sound by driving conservatively.....but why would you do that?

As far as how things work I'm like TSS a novice, but I have an engineering question. If air input is so vital to performance with turbos, why would Ford design the air intake to be just that small little rectangle on the front plastic part of engine bay?
Thanks
MikeV

Not only that, the weather stripping almost completely blocks the flow.  I cut mine out in front of the little scoop like BPD did.

is there any added turbo noise with just adding a K&N filter to the stock air box ?

does this intake below have any performance advantages over the just the drop in filter ?

To answer your question about the ANY intake having ANY performance gains over the drop in, and i believe there is a dyno sheet somewhere around here, showing that all "Cold air intake" IE tyhpoon, air raid, do not make any more power than the K N Drop in, intake just more noise. I believe once the engine is heat soaked, it creates less power due to sucking in the hot air.

Turbo noise off the Drop in.... There is more noise, but i would not say turbo noise until your near red line.
