Anyone ever "tuned" the wifes car and not tell her?

Decided to go with company "x" to have my car tuned.  Shortly after i will tune the wifes X-Sport.

Question is.  Do I tell her about it?  Or let her figure it out on her own.  She only does premium gas, so i am not worried about her putting 87 in all the sudden one day.

… Then gets mad later X2 if there is need for a big ticket warranty claim on her car that gets denied and you spend the money you saved for that vacation she wanted to fix it.

Discuss it with her before… better for the relationship always…. you're talking about the second largest investment most folks make after their home… cars.

My 2 cents.

If you never drive her car(as I never drive my wife's car) I would spend that money for mods on my own car or something she would really appreciate... Assuming she isn't into performance...

I would be tempted to surprise her, however BiGMaC makes a valid point.  My wife has a Taurus SEL so it is just the naturally aspirated 3.5.  The first time she drove my tuned MKS, the look on her face was priceless.  It reminded me of the first time she shot a 12 gauge shotgun and felt the kick that she hadn't expected.  Her eyes got as big as silver dollars.  She asked if I could tune her Taurus.  ;D

In that case I would just tell her what I was doing... Don't want a pissed off
Definitely keep the house commander happy... Makes modding easier overall

tom's right cost me a family room sofa for my new wheels to keep her from blowing her stack,  i'll make that trade any time.

I would never tune her car without letting her now...heck, mine was not happy when I put a K&N filter in her Explorer without discussing it with her...but she was OK that I replaced the rotors and pads without telling her, when it needed it!  Go figure....

mark:
it's called safety. when i put my ebc's on said stock brakes which was true
where ok but not for a big car. did the same thing on the new conti dws's just happened to have the new wheels with them & that's what cost me a sofa. bruce just somehow turn it into a safety issue. now if your life insurance is all paid up & she would love to find a way to get rid of you this may not work!!!!!!!

I've never not told my wife....but when we got her Audi A4 I told her I was planning on putting a tune on it.  Her initial thought was why?, it's fast enough.

Then as soon as she drove it after the tune she was all :D

Every now and again we put it back stock just to remember what it was like before.

That said, I tuned the Explorer as well and i'd be more worried that she knows about the tune on here than the Audi.  The AWD and overall polish on the Audi tune is more predictable.  The stock Explorer tends to really limit power through 1st and 2nd as well as down shifts, but after the tune it's much more prone to unexpected wheel spin, and even worse, the torque steer/pulling on any kind of rutted roads.  Something I'd want her to know about in advance for sure!

I went to a dealer, got my car appraised and had a deal all lined up on my ecoboost. I told the. It was pending a conversation with my wife. She says I bought the car without talking about it. She is joking and doesn't care because I did it with 0 down and no change in my payments. The night we talked about it she says "I wonder how long it would have taken me to notice if you just bought it."

In her defense, I did just go from a blue mks to a silver mks. Just so happens this new one has an ecoboost. ;)

You could just do what I do; make sure when you talk about the cars and performance and such you drone on long enough with techie details until you can tell she's tuned you out, then start to transition into alllll the wonderful goodies you've got planned (BUT, make sure not to look too excited...they can sense your happiness and that sends a signal that you must be doing something you're not supposed to, so that will snap their attention back), just stay nice and monotone and keep blah, blah, blahing right through all the important stuff.
THEN, after your install, when the wife's all; "WTF!?" you can just say; "but babe, we talked about all this, don't you remember??"

An important note here is this: Sure, this has worked every time...but it's been on GIRLFRIEND...and not WIFE so be careful! ;)
I was married once...

I think it's been said that Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus.... LOL

The wife drove my SHO all day today.  Not a peep about the extra performance it has with the tune now.

She knows I bought something but has no clue what.  She signed for it from ups.

2 things.

#1 just goes to show that a tune does not affect the drive ability of the car day to day.

#2 my wife just expects more power and her xsport needs the tune as well

I can't speak for the other tunes, but every tune I've had on my cars has been very driveable and for most drivers who are like my wife, they rarely go past 1/2 - 3/4 throttle it's no big deal.  But on the Lund SS tune that has most of the torque management disabled, if you got WOT it will torque steer, and if the road is rutted at all, it can pull pretty hard to one side.

Nothing that is uncontrollable, but something that is good to know for that once in a blue moon your wife has to floor it!
