Custom downpipes

Has anyone had custom downpipes made from their stock ones? I have a buddy that wants to try just wondering if anyone has any experience with it good or bad

He owns an exhaust shop and builds lil ricers lol. What I mean is just cutting the cats off the stock downpipes and welding bungs on for the o2 sensors

Why would you need 02 bungs?...The primary 02's won't be affected and the secondary 02's are after the cats...So if you simply cut the cats off and weld in pipe then the bungs shouldn't get touched.

If you need emissions monitors to ready for inspection testing you may be in trouble though

Don't know about others, but in the SHO the stock pipes are incredibly convoluted with flat places and definitely restrictive. You should study yours a bit. BTW.... On the dyno only about 5 AWHP gained with stock tune and cat removed compared with catted... This with fully custom pipes.  ajp is correct, with no cat on the dp the emissions system will show as not ready bung or not... A failure if you have to pass emissions. No CEL in the SHO.

The stock DP are 2.25 inches and certainly are restrictive due to the mandrel bents...PPE and LMS are 2.5 inches, think BiGMaC was the first to have his SHO Tested and fitted for PPE which ultimately took sometime to Fabricate, then unleashed came out with there own  3 inch DP which they no longer make based from there site, not an easy task to acquire IMO.  Z

I just picked up a set of the 3" Unleashed non-catted pipes used!!  :)

If its anything like the fusion it is doable as long as its not double walled or anything unfun like that.

Let me rephrase that, after seeing a pic in another thread, your pipes are a bit of a horror show. A good shop could improve it some but you would be just better off buying proper pipes.

I agree.  Looking at them, there wouldn't be much that you'd want to keep.  You'd basically only reuse the top and bottom flanges and replace everything in between.  Makes more sense to just buy ones complete instead of hacking up the expensive factory ones.

Ok Yall convinced me but since there are no emissions here in fl I will be probably going with unleashed 3in catless downpipes since he is right down the road from me

If you can pick them up and save the shipping cost, it makes that an even better choice.

If I were close to Unleashed or LMS, I'd be asking them for a custom dyno tune!

Keep in mind that the political winds sometimes change and move quickly and no emissions may be a temporary situation.

Is a few HP worth all that hassle if the worst were to happen?

PPE will pass regardless of the whims of politicians.

If it was any state other than FL I would tend to agree. With an ocean on one side, a gulf on the other and a width of less than 200 miles between the two you don't get much standing pollution or smog. As a state they have very little incentive to put such laws in place. It would have to be federal or a huge public sea change in the state.

Believe it or not, FL used to have emissions testing.  I lived through it.  They abandoned testing after a comprehensive independent study concluded that the amount of pollution caused by the vehicles waiting in line to be tested and being tested on the rolling dyno or idling caused more pollution than the centers were removing by rejecting failed vehicles.

That same study would probably apply to any state.  Emission testing is ridiculous.

In the end, I passed testing with my race car (needed to pass just so I could race in "street classes") by swapping carburetors and doing the test running on alcohol.  It was fun watching the test takers eyes water and ask me to pull out of the building.  They, very reluctantly, failed me on the visual inspection since I had zero emission equipment (other than hollowed cats), but passed me because the sniffer test was spotless.

FL never had the inspection requirements like CA that require CARB certification.  They just required that cars had catalytic converters and could pass the sniffer test.  If they didn't like the car, they would then also require a rolling dyno test with the sniffer.

Edited to add...this time around I chose to go with PPE catted downpipes.  I don't have emissions testing where I live, but am trying to make up for my past.  It could take a long time. LOL

There is no waiting in line or dynos involved....It's a simple plug into the OBDII port to check the I/M monitors...Very quick and easy and hard to cheat. And the OEM'S already are mandated to have the features built into the ECU's

I'd say it's only a matter of time before everyone will need emissions testing....People are very sensitive and aware of the what's going on with the planet.

You can say it's stupid but if we all thought that we wouldn't be doing our kids any favors....But that said I'm a hypocrite.....I have 3 cars wit turbos and no cats on any of them.

But fortunately for my kids and everybody elses kids not everybody are into cars like me...If they were, the planet would already be out of oil.

I completely agree, i just don't see them doing it.

It's already happening.

It's just the natural progression.....Look at the track record since 1996...More and more standards and stricter every year...Cars have multiple catalytic converters and the EPA has multiple emission tiers that are mandated to become cleaner every year...Higher fuel economy standards across entire vehicle lines

I'm not crazy about it but it will only get worse
