DP selection

Yes!  That does sound good.  No cats/heat treat would do for me.  Very soon I hope!

$175.00 to add thermal coating, I am getting a write up on the performance characteristics of the coating they use.

I wonder if they sell the coating, since I'm not installing your old ones till spring i have time to do that...

And what exactly would i gain from this?

Hopefully, a lot less heat under the hood allowing for cooler intake temps.

Apparently this Thermal Coating for the Downpipes has not been brought up before on any other threads ...
Even though I have not seen any real world testing on the ecoboost platform , It has been well documented to show underhood temperature drops of 25 to 50 degrees on other vehicles that I have read about in Hot Rod and other mags ...
Even in the OLD School Days of Headers we used to Wrap them in HIGH TEMP Insulation to bring temps down  , even if it was to only keep from COOKING you feet on the floorboard .

The question I posed earlier was if anyone had done this on there downpipes  ?  ....    I guess not ....

I think it will be worth the extra expense

I would only attempt to do this to a set that one may already have ,  only If you have access to a High Temp Curing Oven .

I don't believe the Themal Coating that Stainless Works uses is any ordinary run of the mill High Temp Paint .

I want to see the data sheet that PPE has... but for 175 buck if I can lower under hood temps even 10-15 degrees....in Phx I'm definitely going to add it to my order.

4dr thanks for looking into the thermal coating on the PPE down pipes. I appreciate it a bunch as I was unaware of said thermal coating

OK, just PP'd the $175.00    Please have PPE do the coating on my ordered DPs... Thanks Mike for all your help on this.

Maybe I'm crazy (highly likely in any event...LOL)  ... and I had wished for a little more info on the tech sheet... but .... In Phx I believe it is even more important to keep heat saturation and under hood temps down than most places... and the sheet did have this to say:

"WILL I SEE A TEMPERATURE CHANGE? Parts will run cooler. Engine oil and water temperatures have shown a reduction. On headers the radiated heat will be substantially reduced leading to lower underhood temperatures and less heat absorption by nearby parts and surfaces."

Since it worked on headers I am betting that it will have significant effect on heat saturation of components in the closed up SHO engine compartment by coating the DPs..... and that my turbos will thank me for cooler intake air in our summers.

Wonder if it would help the transmission/PTU temps too?
Only way to know would be to have two cars with coated and non coated identical setups driving around together and data logging.
I'll make sure we do some temp readings on his car once they're installed as far as the downpipes and under hood parts (intake manifold) to see if we see a difference.

The way to do it for sure. I'm... and everything will be right there at BMR anyway!

how is the quality of the cats used on the different brands of downpipes ? I'd worry about them crapping out 15k miles later.

I never noticed any smell on my Mustangs with deleted cats. And in TX I can't find anyone to even want to remove my third cat much less the downpipes for non catted which I want to save the extra money and not have a crappy cat in there. I'm not worried about some teenager wanting to look under my SHO for visual cat inspection, plus I like the idea of the sound from stock exhaust with non catted DP's. But I'm saving $60k for a downpayment on a new 3 car garage (house comes with it lol). Plus I'm building a 68 F100 So I'm not in a rush to mod the SHO.

PPE uses the Magnaflow cat. warranty through MF.... dunno about others

Ya'... I believe it is the cats that make the smell many complain about

The magnaflow cats that PPE uses has been tested quite a bit via their header and downpipe kits with great results as far as passing emissions and longevity.

A set of catted PPE downpipes are the next mod I'm considering, but prices need to come way down before I get serious about it.

Prices won't be coming down, sorry they are hand made in the US for each order and the materials are top notch including the $200 each cost for the cats.
These are not cheap products to build. :)

So a catted setup will smell worse than a non catted?
I bow to 4Dr's experience... so I expect no odor.

I will be able to give an educated opinion after I get them on my ride... We'll be dynoing so they will be incidentally tested for odor then.  I just don't personally know about the Magnaflow free flow cats that PPE is using as far as odor. ...

BUT... I do want to exhaust mod and the bolt-on WHP without emissions problems.. odor be damned!  Many (and I)  do notice an odor after spirited driving with stock cats.  So no odor is nice, but moot for me.
