Exhaust Black Out, on OEM Exhaust

Hey all,

As you guys know, back in january I plasti-dipped all of my chrome trim, so the only chrome left was my exhuast. (The plasti dip is still holding up very well)

Well today, I finally got the exhaust blacked out. I used Flat black exhaust paint from harbor freight (1200 degree resistance), and rustoleum 2000 degree gloss clear coat.

I did about 3 coats of black on everything from the tips up to the rear differential/axle area. I then did about 3 coats of gloss on the tips so that they would have a nice shine. I left the pipes after the tips flat black so they would blend in better. All in all, I think it looks amazing.

Now I just need to actually put my full lamin-x on my tail lights, and get the windows tinted and it will be all done as far the blackout. And at some point I need to get the plastic trim painted to match.

Let me know what you guys think. I still need to cure it by idling 10 minutes, waiting 20, idling 20 minutes, waiting 20, and driving normal 30 minutes. BUT it started raining when I was about to do that, so I dont want to drive it and get it wet while it cures.

Definitely looks great on there just need to make sure its fully dried, enjoy.  Z  :thumb: BTW its great to hide any rust spots or even better yet prevent it from forming in the very near future.  Z

Looks great!!!  I love the contrast with flat vs gloss.

So jealous of the black SHO.  I owned a gen 1 and 2 SHO in black and blacked out both of those way back in the day.  Somehow I ended up with a white MKS. Doooh!

I have several cans of plasti-dip black and clear waiting for the right time to coat the chrome on my MKS.  Hadn't thought of the exhaust tips yet.  I do also have some Rustoleum Black Out Chrome paint.  Wonder how that would hold up on the exhaust tips?

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I would recommend using high heat 1200 degree or higher, paint on the exhaust tips just to be safe since they do get kinda hot, and because that way you can do more than just the tips. I will report back once I have seem how durable the paint is also.

What's the best way to do the chrome trim around the Windows?

IMHO 3M wrap... Do each section separately. Use large pieces and not a lot of pressure. Don't try to remove the trim... It is very thin and almost certainly will be ruined.

I agree with BigmaC....  I did mine with vinyl as well.  But I used the transparent tinted vinyl.  All of my window trim now looks like blk chrome.  The tinted vinyl is also thicker than regular vinyl and a heat gun is your friend for making the bends easy. if you have any...

Wow never thought of that totally going to so that love how there is no more chimney effect

I considered the vinyl idea, but just not sure about the loooong stretch from the base of the windshield up and over the roof and down to the trunk.  I think that section would either require seams or waste a TON of vinyl and be really hard to get right.

I plastidipped all of mine. Masked off the car really really good, used two cans of black, and a can of clear. $15 or so total. It looks pretty good, and has held up for over 6 months.

The trim is removable BTW, if you want to go with vinyl. The two bottom pieces on each door have some hard core clips at front and back and some smaller ones in the middle, but it is easy to break the clips. The top front piece has a screw at atleast one corner (maybe both, been a while since I looked), and is a press fit on the center section, be careful if you take it off as it is easy to bend/dent it.
The back top piece is a fully folded on and glued piece. WIth a good head gun it should be easy to remove, but again, be careful not to bend or dent it.

The piece that has the ford emblem on the tail is glued to the body from the tailights up to almost the ford emblem, there are a few screws/clips (I think 2) at the ford emblem), remove those and use a good heat gun and it should come off, again be careful not to bend or dent it.

The lower grill on the front bumper pops out, but can be easily masked off on the car. The upper grill is also removable, but I recall needing to remove the bumper also to get it off, so I just left it on. You can take the support/cover off of the top though and be afforded a lot more room to work.

If you do black out all of the chrome, I highly recommend painting the calipers as well. The silver just looks weird IMO, but then again thats with black wheels right in front.

Good luck in however you decide to do it, and make sure to post pictures!

Sorry OP for the threadjack, but it is at least a similar topic...

I was reading the description above and couldn't understand the chrome locations.  Then I realized that the MKS is different than the SHO.  I have one very long trim piece that covers from the base of the windshield to the base of the back window.  It measures about 128" long.  Would take a LOT of vinyl and a good installer I think.

Pardon the weird angles...

My plan is a lot of masking and plasti-dip.

You would have to be very very good at removing the trim and putting it back on without damaging it, from what I hear.

My plan is a lot of masking and plasti-dip.

That is odd, I can see the confusion. Makes me wonder though, if the door trim on an MKS would fit on my SHO?
