exhaust tuning ?

I bought stainless works exhaust and cated down pipes.it's to my understanding that I'll have to have the car tuned now but a spoke to a local shop and they think they can estimate the HP close enough to just adjust the injectors instead of tuning. So my question is has anyone gone this route and has everything held up.

Kind of putting the cart before the horse with the exhaust work before getting tuned, but I personally would not have them messing with my injectors. You really should get a tune to realize the benefit of the exhaust work and to avoid throwing codes. I would recommend going through Livernois Motorsports for your tuning needs.

Adjust injectors for just an exhaust? Sounds crazy to me, especially on a SHO that has minimal effect from just exhaust. Also, do they realize it's a direct injection engine? Do they know what the heck they are doing?

If you want to get a tune, by all means do it, you'll gain a ton of power, but the exhaust will not be much of a factor there.

As SRT said, check out Livernois and another reputable tuner is Unleashed.

Is the shop referring to adjusting the flow rate of the injectors?  That is just one component of a complex mechanism that would need to be adjusted for your vehicle to run properly & reliably.  If the computer (ECU/PCM) is not aware of changes to the injectors, you could end up with a hydrolock or an excessively lean situation as it tries to react to feedback from the onboard sensors, either of which can ensure the destruction of the engine.

As the commentors above have noted, invest in a good tune before signing up to be a guinea pig for untried modifications.  Unless you've got time & money to burn ...

If they are referring to simply blueprinting the injectors/flow rate, that is a commendable, but usually unnecessary, course of action.

I have to echo the comments made above... And say the rec from your shop is out of ignorance of the engine/ECU or a scam.  Get tuned first. (DPs don "require" a tune) Have your tuner adjust the tune so you get the most from the early turbo spooling.  Then decide.  I have never heard of "tuning" the exhaust in the Ford 3.5 GTDI engine.

Yes I thinks it's blue printing them it's a very reputable shop in the area they specialize in svt they've doin work on my lightning. So has anyone had to tune there car because of cat down pipes and exhaust?  I was told that people had to have this done because the engine was leaning out from the extra air flow

There is a thread on DP's and the power they add to a factory tune. The car limits it self and wont let it lean out.

Yeah tuning for DP's isn't necessary, not on our cars any how cause they are MAP based. MAF based cars do require tuning even for CAI's. But our cars ECM's is capable of adapting to these changes. Now I am not saying a tuner can't take advantage of the addition of DP's but its not a requirement.

.... That's the trick... No MAF sensor.... True.... All the reputable tuners can optimize performance for the "air in - air out" mods... But the ECU , as crash says, can adjust for them.  The one exception is non-catted DPs where the tuner must turn off the last O2 sensor to avoid throwing a CEL.... This will of course fail emissions testing.

One last comment... The changes caused by DPs, CAI, and all currently available exhaust mods or replacements ... Including a post downpipes cutout will not, individually or in any combination, cause leaning of the fuel mixture requiring the ECU to pull timing or shut down throttle.... Without significant tune mods or exotic fuel mixing.  Bottom line.... EB (GDTI) turbo' is not the same as svt... It work very differently due to different sensors and torque based equations in the ECU.

...and no dis meant to the shop... Just don't want you taken advantage of....  :beer2:
