Magnaflow x pipe , in place for 3rd cat resonator.

Has anyone tried the MagnaFlow x pipe in place of the third cat and resonator and making up the difference with straight pipes going into the cat back?

I think you would need a 2.5 inch X-PIPE since the OEM Exhaust is 2.25 inch. Z

Is this for your MKS? Due update your signature with your current vehicle and any mods you may have so we can assist you better, thanks. Z

I have been looking to replace just the 3rd cat with an x-pipe. I have read from a few people that the resonator helps with rasp. Haven't even looked at which one I need. Like Z said, got to go with a 2.5 inch as the stock system is 2.25.

I was looking at the two and a quarter and thinking I could possibly use the butt style connection heavy exhaust clamps that's made for matung together same size exhaust pipes.

Are you saying the two-and-a-half would be better and then slip the factory exhaust into it and clamp it?

2.5" you can slip over stock, and will have to widen the stock 2.25" a bit to make a smooth transition and proper seal. You can also buy an appropriate 2.25" Xpipe, intlets will be a bit larger than that, so that you don't need any resizing of the stock stuff. With an X and flowmasters my car was pretty friken loud, and with downpipes it sounded like a monster. Both cases it could be heard from a few blocks away. You will likely get a bit more drone with the X than the stock setup.

I seen quite a few x pipes much cheaper then magnaflow.... im wondering if theirs is any better..

I was hoping more memeber would chime in , someone had to have looked in this before and can report results

Correct me if I'm wrong but the third cat on our cars looks more like an H pipe so I'm wondering if there's any performance difference with an x pipe

Engine masters *JUST* did a segment on Xpipe versus H-pipes..  zero difference, all was in margin of error of each other.

I did a 2.5" X-pipe.... no drown but a little rasp at times.

3" non-catted down pipes -> 2.5" X-pipe -> stock resonater -> stock mufflers

Thanks for all responses so far, I found a company called Jones out of TN and they make 2.5 and 2.25 x pipes that supposedly are slip fit . Im calling today to verify that. . I found lap joint clamps and ss pipe at summit racing.
If its slip fit like im understanding ill be ordering this week .

I used jones for my X. It worked fine. The issue you will have is that the shape of the jones X vs. that of the stock resonator is a bit different. As such, it may not be a direct fit.

If im deleting 3rd cat and resonator maybe there is room to wiggle the pipes to fit?

Also maybe a flex section will help?

Thanks for posting that thread I'll have to thoroughly read through that does anyone know if possibly keeping the stock resonator and running straight pipes just deleting the third cat I wonder if there would be any power difference I don't really know how the third cat is set up it almost appears like an H pipe Style?

So from my understanding, OP in that thread replaced both the resonator and the 3rd cat with that? I will have to look at sound clips of it once I get off work. I was hoping to just replace 3rd cat with just a small x and keep stock resonator and mufflers. Curious of the difference between that and doing what that OP did.

In any event it's always nice to get an inside perspective of ideas before pulling the trigger. Z  :)

You need a connection between banks IMO otherwise it sounds more like a v6 bonneville with no muffler or those nasty v6 pontiacs. Its much more of a weird rasp.

I read through that thread religiously. Lol

I called jones and the center to center measurement is 4"

I measured the stock resonator and it looks like its 4" as well c to c.

Do you remember exactly the issue?

Im debating on ordering flex sections if its off a bit otherwise i wont need them.

I believe since I ordered a 2.5" x-pipe, and the stock stuff was 2.25" the shop that did my install had to make a slightly curved reducer to go from the stock piping into the X, and then out of the x into the stock catback. However, I only repalced the resonator, not the 3rd cat as well, and I believe it would have been easier had I done both.

@Zsho - All is well my friend. Just trying not to get too immersed here, lest I mod the crap out of the fusion while I wait on info on the next SHO model.
