McGard Installation Kit (Spline and Locking Nuts) on factory 2010 20" wheels

I picked up this set from McGard (Part# 65540):

I ordered the 65540BK variant to get black to match the plastidipped wheels.

The SHO was in for other service and I asked them to install these while it was in.  They did not install them saying them that the seat was smaller than the factory lugs nuts would be too small for the factory wheels and dig in to the aluminum.  They are a "tuner" set of nuts, but from everything I read, they should be fine.

I called and spoke with McGard and they insisted that they will work fine on the factory wheels and I had nothing to worry about.

Has anyone here installed this set?  Any opinions?

Thanks!

Don

If they are 1/2 x 20 they should work just fine. They look to be almost identical to the stock ford McGard locking kit, except black.

These are what I run, and they work perfectly, I never ran them with OEM wheels because I had my car delivered with my aftermarket wheels already installed, but the ones you have (and these) should be fine.

Yeah, as long as the taper on the nut makes contact with the full taper of the wheel, you should be fine...

I think the taper was the concern of the shop.  The taper angle is the same, but there is more taper surface area than the lug covers and they were saying it would dig in because of that.

I really want to install the, but don't want to ruin my wheels!

Can you remove an OE lug nut and check the witness marks? I just looked at the marks on my lug nuts (on my PI wheels), and it appears a only about 1/8" (along the taper) is engaging the wheel. The actual taper length on the nut is much longer.

Did you end up installing these, Don? I like the McGard stuff and was considering these for my XSport.

I have not. It's been a crazy couple weeks :) Hoping to get a chance this week to check the mating surface and witness marks.

Hey Don,

Just wanted to follow up. I ended up purchasing a McGard kit of tuner lugs and lock nuts for my Explorer Sport.

I installed them Friday afternoon when I pulled off my winter wheels and reinstalled my OE 20" Aluminum wheels. I drove them about 30 miles Friday night and retorqued them. Saturday, I did an autocross and tightened them again at lunch. Some of the nuts required an additional 1/8 turn to return to torque. I checked them again at the conclusion of the auto-x and none of them had backed off again.

I pulled a couple of the splined nuts this morning and did not see any damage or marring of the aluminum wheel, so I'm going to continue to use them. I do need to find a 19mm to 13/16" lug adapter, so I can keep it with my spare tire iron.

Hope this helps.

I actually went to install them yesterday and realized the difference in drive size and stopped.  I am going to get a dedicated socket wrench and socket to leave in the car before I swap them out.  My luck I would swap them and then have an issue and be stuck on the side of the road without the right tools :)

I will pick that up tomorrow and install them.

Do you have pics with them installed?  I had a few on hand tight and they seemed like they might be a little long.  Thoughts?

Don

I really like the black on black look, and the length doesn't bother me. I'll snap a picture when the sun comes up.

I ordered one of these adapters and plan to throw it in the ziplock bag with the keys, so I don't have to carry around an extra wrench. I will probably end up trimming it short, since I don't need the extra length.

Well that was a little too easy not to order...  Its minor, but better than my original option.

I wish this site had a premium membership option!  The amount of free information I have learned here in the last 3 months is well worth it.

I look forward to your pics.

I'm not sure how the SHO lug nut pockets compare to the XSport depth-wise, but here are a couple pics of mine installed. Please forgive the dirt/grime. Apparently we're not done with winter here...

When I pull the wheels off next winter, I'm going to shoot the lug pockets with some gloss black paint. Looks like the factory spray did not get very good coverage down in there...
