My rod was feeling claustrophobic so it jumped out of my block

Threw a rod on the way home this evening. Getting on the interstate and laid into it from about 60-80 then as soon as I let off the gas pedal it went. Everything seemed well up to that point. Car has about 1500 miles on it since it was tuned -- 29110 total. As far as how hard it's been ran I haven't been to the track yet with it and I've put less than a gallon of meth through it.

Here's the tune thread with mod list -

Hole is basically right above the drain plug in the block. A few pics -

Last 2 are zoomed out for reference.

Oh well, guess I'm an unlucky one. It's been a late night.  Time for some sleep. I'm sure this thread will have exploded by morning!

Crap that is brutal. I really don't know what to say. Im sure you will find out why in time. That just sucks.

I still remember the first time I threw a rod like that, the sound of bits of rod/block/piston/etc sounded like I was driving thru a patch of gravel. It was an unfamiliar noise but when the cluster warning lights lit up and I smelled the burning oil, I knew it was trouble :( I'm sorry for your loss

I hoped this was a joke when I read the title, Steven :(  Dang, really sorry to read about/see ...  You've put in so much effort & patience into the SHO, surely did not deserve this!

FYI:  Gen I & II SHOs could do this due to rod bearing failure.  You would hear "knocking" and the oil pressure light would start flickering.  If you ignored it for a while, you could lose your engine that way.

No warning lights or noises before it happened. Just let off the gas and the terrible sound of metal parts scattering.

I'm debating what to do. I have a lot of equity in the car so I might see what I can get on trade with needing a new short block. An order for a new 2015 Mustang is sounding good right about now. Or build a motor, who knows right now.

So sorry to hear this. Having gone through a couple of motors in my lifetime, I feel your pain. On another note about a week ago I was looking on ebay and there were a couple of 3.5 motors for sale at a real good price. Something to think about.

Sorry to hear about that :(

Typically when you see a failure like that it's hp related.

Unfortunately, making a lot of power with stock parts is always a gamble. Some live forever and some let go.

I'm definitely just on the "unlucky" list with all the people right around 400 whp.

Makes me think maybe it was rod bearing related but then again I had no signs prior.

Oh man! Sorry to hear. Definitely got unlucky there, considering how many people are out there with your same-ish hp-level and mods.

Holy ****...
Thats kinda scary as meth is in my near future.

I wonder what caused it; bearing failure, power, detonation from tuning issue or even bad fuel, partial hydrolock, etc.

Wow that sucks! and a bit unnerving. The one Failed engine I seen at LMS rod bearing was in excellent shape and had almost no wear on it. The bearing shells look to be made of a different material then used in older cars. I wish you only the best of luck in your endeavors.

I just need a short block to send to Livernois if I do build one. I have a lead on one as of now. I'll install it myself.

It's not much of a consolation, but if you do build one she should handle 700+hp. And the first on the forum to do it. I would love to see that. Just not on your terms unfortunately.

IMO making that level of power will just make it a dyno queen. Enough to get into the mid-high elevens is all it needs. The rest of the drivetrain isn't up to handling it.
