Octane Booster

I went to reply to one of the previous posts and it came up saying its been more than 120 days suggested started a new topic.  Again, as you're aware, I'm a Noob here and new to the Ecoboost in general.

In my area, the highest octane gas you can regularly find is 91.  I've only used Chevron 91 in my car ever but I've also been using the Royal Purple Max Boost with each tank.

I had found some articles online saying that is towards the top of the ratings and it is readily available to me.

My car has been performing great in general (only 1600 miles so far) and I figured that extra step allows my engine to run better and cleaner.  Also, by doing this I was hoping that I could run a 93 octane tune when I buy my tuner.

Looking for input, please attack at will!

Nope can't run 93 tune with these typical octane boosters.  Would need something like Race Gas additive or Torco, something heavy duty.  And I don't know if it is advisable to add those in regularly, ok for track use.  Chevron gas is probably among the best you can buy, Shell 93 VPower Nitro+ being a great option (not for you, sadly).

You can not run a 93 tune, without a strong additive, as mentioned by SHOdded. However, if you are working with AJP, or Torrie, there is room to improve from a base 91 tune with datalogging. Also, if you have E85 available anywhere around you, you can experiment with an E-blend, such as E15 or E20 to run a higher performance tune... I run an E20 AJP tune, and currently have 15 PSI with 20-25 deg Spark Advance at WOT.

Ok, so I'm new to the whole E85 thing.  Does that get you a higher octane?  I thought the problem with ethanol fuel was the reduced inherent power per gallon compared to gasoline.  Am I mistaken?

I'm not an E85 guru, but full E85 is somewhere in the realm of 107 octane I believe. It is definitely above 100 octane. You do use it quicker, due to the fuel qualities, ~30% more consumption WOT, 15-20% more consumption under normal conditions.

With My 93 + E85 blend (E20 or so), I am able to add 10-15 degrees of spark advance over just 93, which is due to the increased octane.

While you will use a bit more E85, it is cheaper per gallon, so its kinda a wash. But if you have E85 available it is an easy way to increase octane, as a 91+E85 blend would get you past the point of a 93 octane tune IMO.

Also running an AJP E20 tune here, but with 91 octane. Felt a substantial gain from the added Ethanol. I would guesstimate 25hp pretty easily. with 2.5 gallons of E85 to your 19 gallon tank(the rest being 91) that puts you right a E20 and your octane right at 93. tricky thing is finding ACTUAL 85% ethanol in the winter. Most stations run a lower E content in the colder months so you'd have to keep an eye on that.
Otherwise, i personally wouldn't bother with the off the shelf octane boosters. ACES IV is the only other additive that has any bit of a reputable effect on performance and economy.

ACES IV is a good fuel additive that has been proven to work by members on this board... it also has lubricating properties that could extend the life of the motor.
E85 is much cheaper for the octane boost. There are numerous threads about the benefits of ethanol and direct injection. Ethanol not only ups the octane rating but it also cools the air charge so the effective octane of E85 is close to 160.
I run an E20 mix with ACES IV during the track season and DD it during that time. I have 100% gasoline available to me so I run 4.5 gallons of E85 and 13.5 of 91. That gets me close to 95 octane... but that cooling effect of that ethanol ups it even more

Race gas concentrate in the orange and white bottle is the real deal ive used it....its not technically an octane booster but i guess you could call it that....its really race gas concentrate lol

I have seen the VP Maddative Octane Boost and Octanium. I know VP fuels are great but never knew they made any additives. Anyone tried either or think they would be a good octane booster for the track or "fun time" use not at the track?

IIRC, Brian (bamsho) used Octanium but it left orange stuff on the plugs.  You need to look for MMT free additives.  Not sure about Maddative.

Maddative/Octanium says "Not recommended for use with catalytic converters and/or O2 sensors" so that won't work.

In Cali, I run the ACES IV, 91 octane Chevron/Mobil gas and the LMS LMS 93 4+X tune. No problems

You logging your knock sensor? Curious...
