Bought my 2013 pp sho with 40k miles on it or so around march of this year (2016) from a stand alone luxury/exotics dealership.. got a full on platinum 5 year extended warranty through some warranty company... unleashed tuned the car in june... flashed back to stock 2-3 months after (septemberish) cause I was selling it to a family member which I ended up doing a month ago. Only thing left on the car at all is a catback (mostly due to when I bought the car, stock exhaust was almost rusted off so I figured why not?)... family member said check engine light has turned on in the morning the last 2 days (cold cold winter mornings) but was not there when he turned on the car later in the day... he's bringing it into ford in a couple weeks to do the recall checkup and bringing up the light issue.... cars been stock tune for a long time... the family member drives like a grampa and literally barley touches the gas (not into fast cars)..  catback is the only thing on it period.. will they check for a tune even tho nothing is blown or even wrong really? Can they know forsure it wasn't the 3 owners before me that tuned it if they see it was tuned? Will they know if it was tuned period since it was quite some time ago? Should I even give a damn at all what ford says cause that stand alone warranty company would get footed the bill by ford anyway cause it's not like this extended warranty company plugs in to check for flashes before paying for warranty work?  Or am I making something out of nothing?  Lol

Honestly... I would just keep my mouth shut about the tune. Does your family member know it was tuned? If yes, tell him to keep his mouth shut about it... He didn't tune it... Most likely nothing about a tune will pop up unless you or your family member says something... Good luck!!!

No he doesn't know about it... and I mean it's for a CEL that came on and went off a few times upon starting the car in the cold morning on a 55k mile car... could be a 10000 things... but nothing blew up (knock on wood) so I'm not too worried.

It could be something simple as a bad battery and would not jump the gun especially having 3 owners,  Do you happen to know if the original battery is still in??. Z

If he has no knowledge of the tune he can plausibly deny any inquiry. I doubt there will be any issues however. With the fact that it has had multiple owners that is also something to keep in mind. I think you should be more than fine, as others have said.

So if somehow **** did hit the fan which I dought.... can they prove it was tuned in OUR possession or just that it was tuned period? Cause how could they say it wasn't the other 3 owners?

AND.... since my extended warranty was purchased through some 3rd party company and not ford... why would ford want to dig that deep if they are not paying the repair, or want to tell the 3rd party not to cover me if its not their problem..

And since it's been months and many many miles driven since tuned... maybe 2 thousand miles... might be harder to detect if it was a past owner tuning it or a dead battery..... deny deny deny

In the grand scheme of things, if Ford deems a failure was due to a tune and denies warranty, it seems to me that it would not matter who or when the tune was installed, just that it was done.

If you unknowingly bought a car with no air filter element and the engine blew up and Ford tracked it back to lack of filter, they're not going to give you a pass because you're a new owner and just didn't know - a modification (or improper maintenance) was done that resulted in failure.

Perhaps legally, Ford would have to prove that the tune caused the failure, but their pockets are pretty deep if they deny your warranty service and you decide you want to fight it.

EDIT: Not sure how this works with aftermarket warranties.

I hear ya but their warranty is not the one I payed for at the time of purchase. So it's a strange case... nothing failed so not super worried but I've never heard these points I brought up really. Just a check engine on and off everyday is my particular issue...and how could they deny a warranty anyway if you were sold a warranty on a car with 3 previous owners that has been tuned in the past. Strange... idk.

Somewhere, there is probably a 200 page document full of lawyer speak that outlines the terms and conditions of the third party warranty.

I would guess that in said document, it would outline your coverage regarding accessories, etc.

Does it only cover work at Ford, or can you take it to any shop? Maybe an independent shop would have less capability to read stuff off the ECM (like flash count)?

I can take it to any shop but it is being taken to ford cause of the appointment for the recall so while there, the check engine light is being checked... NOW, if the engine was toast....and the car was undrivable I'd go to another certified mechanic
