Precision Spark Plug Gapping

Picked this thing up. I think I saw someone link it on the EBPF Facebook. I almost want to offer this service to the community for beer money vs paying LMS :p.

looks like a slick little tool to have around. pricey though. honestly this is all i've ever needed. the 542's are spec'd for the 2.7 ecoboost but come pre-gapped at .029( i tightened them up a tiny bit before install)and are still 1 heat range cooler than the 3.5 plugs.

they also seemed to be indexed so the open part of the ground strap faced the intake port on all 6 plugs. maybe i was just lucky

Tell me about the 542's?

How do you know they are 1 range cooler? Are you talking about the 534's?

534's are what are in the 2013+ SHO's right?

If the 542's are 1 range cooler than the 534's and pregapped at .029" that would be a great plug because the NGK's that people are using that are cooler than the stockers are not supposed to be closed more than .012" per NGK but people are doing it anyway and possibly risking weakening the ground strap and having if fall in the cylinder

the above reasons are exactly why i switched to the 542's. i suppose i'm a little bit ahead of myself claiming first hand knowledge that they're 1 heat range cooler. i've done some research but have never been able to find a direct source that states the heat range of the 542 plugs. however, matt robinson of gearhead auto performance(now tuning 13+ SHOs as well as offering a rebuilt upgraded turbos) states that the 542s are just rebranded ngk 6510s that come pre-gapped and made to run the smaller gap. this makes sense because the 2.7 runs the bigger turbos and higher boost from the factory.
i feel they're the best plug option for tuned SHO owners. i just swapped out my 6510s for the 542s a couple weeks ago.

Ajp would colder plugs benefit my setup?
IMO i don't see any reason not to run a colder plug. . even if you're running meth. it can prevent small amounts of knock/enable a minute amount more timing, and dropping 1 heat range  doesn't negatively affect drive ability in any way whatsoever. so better question is why not do it?

just FWIW. video shows knock and spark activity comparing the 542s vs 534

I went ahead and returned my SP534 plugs. Was going to wait for AJPs input but I'm pulling the trigger on these colder plugs.

wise decision. i see only upsides to the cooler plug option now that the 542's are available and you can run the smaller gap safely

Does this all hold true for '10-'12 models?

Since I can't get 93 octane this may help my ACES IV in preventing knock. Oh, I run the 93 4+x tune with 91 octane and ACES.

Generally, the smaller the plug gap, the richer the engine will run, and will cause fouling if not accounted for in the tune.  I remember AJP stating numerous times that blowout is not an issue with these engines, so no need to go 0.028.  Don't know if methanol helps keep plugs clean like it does the intake tract, so that is another consideration.

The attraction here is mainly the perfect pregap, maybe a colder plug.

So I have a new to me 2015 SHO.

I want to know should I go with SP534 gapped at .030 or go with SP542 gapped at .030? The SP542 is one step colder supposedly.

The vehicle has 39k miles and I doubt they have been changed by the previous owner.

I plan to get a tune in the near future. Any advice helps. Thanks.

If your still under warranty would stick with the OEM Motorcraft/NGK-SP-534 IMO.
How many miles on your SHO? thanks.  Z

I have 39k on it.

Spoke to Livernois and they rec'd the SP542 gapped at .030.

Also have a drop in filter on the way for it as well.
