Shopping for Tires

do you get wheel hop with the Generals ? wondered if a softer sidewall would help reduce it ??

I'm also wondering if anyone has played around with air pressure trying to reduce wheelhop?

Maybe a new tire source. I stumbled onto these guys while pricing shoes for my SHO. Prices on sizes and tires I looked at better. Full mfg warranty, road hazard available as well as installation. Shopping 255/45-20 Hankooks.

I looked at that website when I was shopping around. For the G-Max in a 245/45R20, it was quite a bit more expensive. It looks like they're selling them for $159 now, but even at $159 each, they're charging $114 for shipping to me, so the total is $750. Depending on your proximity to a distribution center, it may be more affordable.

DiscountTireDirect sold me the same tires for $596 shipped.

Keep in mind that a 255/45R20 is a more common size, so they sometimes run a little less than the 245/45R20.

I had a set of GMAX's on a SRT4 and they were great.  Much quieter and smoother ride than the factory Goodyear F1's.  Plus they gripped just as well.

I'm loving them so far. We just had over a foot of snow dumped on us night before last and they are performing better than I had anticipated.

Just had the GMAX AS-03's put on the SHO, I know they are new, but they are quieter than the Primacy's, handle road imperfections amazingly, are very comfortable and the turn in is very crisp. I have heard a few reviews saying they are "noisy" I guess I will have to wait and see. Being a directional tire, they will be noisier than a non-directional as they wear, just can't comment on that yet. I bought them for their great snow performance as well as wet / dry. The Kumho Excta 4X's were next on my list.

I'm thoroughly enjoying the GMAX so far. If you haven't yet had the chance to test them in the snow, I think you'll be pleased when you do.

Hey thanks Joleat, I completely missed the post where you actually did go with the GMAX's. Man I am loving them so far, and we might have some light snow today to test them in. I love the handling, comfort and agressive tread design.

I was looking at the Firehawk Wide Oval AS as well, but there are very few reviews, and from looking at the complete lack of siping on the middle tread blocks I don't think their snow performance would be very good.

Good and timely post! I was noticing that the MXV4s on my 11 SHO are "sho"ing some cracking in the sidewall. They have been a good tire, but at 27k, I don't think they should have that much cracking in the sidewall. We've had this problem with Michelins before. Our Accord *had* them and had the same problem - cracking (dry rot) on the sidewall with plenty of tread left.

Anyway, I was also looking at the Firestone Wide Oval AS until I read this post. Thanks for the timely thread!

I also noticed some cracking in my Michelins.

As far as WOT traction goes, I didn't have any issues with the Michelins and I still don't have any with the Generals. At 36psi, neither tire would spin upon take-off on dry pavement. I've launched from idle, from 1500rpms, and from 2000rpms as I've seen some others say that 2000rpms is optimal. No spinning. To be honest, I'm not sure what you (mostly stock) guys are doing to lose traction at launch, lol. Maybe my car just sucks! I plan to tune soon enough... we'll see if that changes anything.

Do you have the performance package?  The 3:16 gears and ability to shut off advance trac helps. In my experience, completely stock, I've launched at 2,000 to 2,200 RPM's and not spun. But after some practice I got the tires to break loose, and even squeak on the 1-2 shift. It's not very hard but it's not easy either. You have to do it just right to get a good tire squeal type launch.

Intake, Catless exhaust, stage 4 tune, H&R springs is stock? I got ripped off then.

But yet you don't have a tune, and ask how we spin?

Fraca,

No PP offered for the MKS.

Kolk,

Stop wearing your heart on your sleeve, lol. I wasn't talking about you specifically. I was speaking to a broad audience. I've seen several posts, here and other places, where SHO owners talk about traction issues. When I look at their mods, I see that some are stock and some just have a tune. I admit, I have no firsthand experience with a tuned SHO/MKS yet, but my past experience with tunes has not been life changing in the way that some claim. If you have more mods and are having traction issues, I'm not saying I don't believe you. I'll try not to hurt your feelings again. :D

Oops, didn't know you were referring to an MKS. it's gonna be hard to break the tires loose. But you should hit 60 before the 2-3 shift giving you good 0 to 60 times.

No worries man!

I'd like to see a stock non-PP SHO vs a PP SHO just to see how the advantage of having lower gears in the PP car translates into on pavement performance. Obviously, on paper, they will allow you to accelerate faster, but it would be interesting to see where the "break even" point is. You mentioned a key point when you brought up hitting 60 before the 2-3 shift. Although, I think the PP cars are still slightly faster to 60 if you can believe everything you read on the internet. So, does a stock PP car take a stock non-PP in the 1/8 but maybe not the 1/4? Either way, I think it would be a driver's race, but it's fun food for thought!

i haven't noticed any cracking on my Primacies on my MKS, but i find the tire to be too hard and not have alot of grip!

but, they certainly have alot of tread life.  I want to get some new tires, but at 37K my Primacies still have alot of thread; ugh.  my frugality won't allow me to trash completely usable/safe tires...
