Started my exterior black out

Hey all,

I started today with blacking out my 2015 SHO, as I dont really like chrome or silver and unfortunately it wasnt possible to get black moldings or black calipers.

I started by taping off the rear decklid, and plastidipping the emblems and the chrome divider, though I dont really like how the flat black looks on the car, so I will be getting some glossifier for it soon and adding a coat or two of that. I also need to clean up the bit of overspray I left, as I didnt do the best job taping.

The better part of the day was spent on painting the calipers gloss black, as the silver stuck out too much IMO.

My phone storage got full after the last picture on the drivers side so I didnt take any pictures of the passanger side but it looks just as good. My plan for tomorrow is to black out the rest of the chrome, and use glossifier to make sure it matches a bit better with the gloss black trim from ford and with the wheels.

I also have some Gunsmoke Lamin-X tail light covers that I will be applying, and depending on how easy they are to install and the looks of them, I will probably get a lightly smoked headlight cover set from lamin-x as well. I also plan to tint the windows, 18% all around, or 20% front 5% rear but will hold of a bit until I can afford to pay a reputable shop for a good film that wont interfere with the satellite radio signal, etc.

Let me know what you guys think!

I don't know that I've ever heard of any non-metalized window tint today that would interfere with radio/satellite reception on newer cars.

Good job on the blackout btw. I also need to hit you up regarding the parts I need to ship back to ya.

Looking good!

On the tails... You might want to use the Lamin-X charcoal (the darkest color as it comes closest to the black body color....

It lets plenty of light through for all functions... I was pulled over by AZ DPS once (about 2years ago) for the blackout, but he let me go without any paper or ticket as he said he could see the tails and turns easily in broad daylight. The film still looks new after 2 1/2 years in the Phx sun.

Here"s some pics and comparison... Other pics are scattered through the thread: http://www.ecoboostperformanceforum.com/index.php/topic,1730.msg22242.html#msg22242

Looks very nice, I like it. My next painting job will be the calipers as well.

It definitely looks a lot better than the silver standing out!

PMed you. Also as far as tint goes that was something I heard when I went to the one place near my college and they were trying to sell me a $500 package, so I need to research that a lot more.

In about a year you'll have to do the plasti-drip again.  It'll look like ****.

I have had plastidip on emblems on both my truck (that I traded in for the SHO) and my mustang for ~4 years and no issues. I had the hood on the mustang plastidipped as well, and it held up for ~ 2 years, before I took it off because the tape lines werent the best and it finally got to me.
I am also hoping the glossifier will help it hold up. I used Rustoleum Flexi-Dip actually, which is esentially the same thing and costs the same, but not the plasti-dip name brand.

Also if it does deteriorate, then I will go to my local paint supplies store next time I am at my parents house and purchase a quart or so of Tuxedo Black Metallic and go ahead and prep it and paint it to match the body color exactly. The flexi-dip is more to test the look of the blackout and if it holds up for a long time then that is even better.

Nice, post up when you do the Lamin-X, I am thinking about doing the exact same.
Definitely will, I hope to get the tails done tomorrow.

If I had bought it I would have purchased the darkest color, and gone as dark as possible on the headlights as well so I could do it all at once. Buuut, it was a christmas present from my girlfriend so she didnt get it as dark, im not complaining though because it was free! If I think it needs darker down the road then I will go ahead and change it out at some point. I have had a mild 35% or so film on my mustang tailights for a long time and really like the look (it is a red mettalic tho)

Also an update, I got both the driver and passenger side trip done, as well as the SHO fender emblem (I did the honeycomb part as well). The pictures are below and I really like how it looks. The weather started to get nasty so we will finish it up (the front end, and glossfying the rear) tomorrow, and then apply the lamin-x.
