Steelies with taller tires for track use

Anyone running smaller diameter steel wheels with a taller tire at the track? Curious if that would net a better time for those who are pushing more power? Debating on getting another set tires for my stock 20in wheels (Conti's) or spending the money on steel wheels and tires for the track?

I have no experience with this but wouldn't steel wheels be a lot heavier....resulting in worse times?  I think you want the lightest wheel/tire combination you can get but I am far from an expert.

I know it would cost a good bit more, but weld was willing to work with me to fit 18s made for the gt500 on the SHO. Might be worth looking at, but much more $$ than steelies. Otherwise, if steelies are on your horizon, look for 18s of the SEL/SE models, and see if you can test fit on, you can get 18s or 19s that will be a bit lighter than PI steelies.

I wanted to stay with 18's when I got new wheels, but one problem I ran into was I couldn't find a good tire that would fit an 18 and fit the car, I was trying to stay close to stock size. I went with a light set of 20's and noticed quite the difference in how much harder that car pulls compared to the PI wheels. As far as traction goes I could launch at 1900-2000 with the PI wheels and not get wheel spin, but that is a lot of weight to get moving of the line. My best 60ft with the PI wheels and running only down pipes and tune was 1.9.

The PI steel wheels are hard to find and at least $100 each on the used market.
Also quite heavy.
I would think you could find an 18" alloy wheel for a Taurus cheaper than that.

Also a good option, stock mustang 18's or 19's would be pretty easy to find and can be dirt cheap depending on the seller

Like these, though knowing the tires will probably be useless (all 4 match, but lot smaller and SBS would torch them) that is stretching the $ a hair for a set of used wheels..
