Sync 2 -> Sync 3

I've been looking into because my dad has an explorer with sync 3.  Seems like a lot better system.  But also haven't really found a very cost effective way to do it.

That's pretty spendy.  You can find the APIM for ~$350, which puts it in a reasonable realm for cost.

The biggest advantage that would be worth the hassle would be apple/android car app compatibility.

Looks like a metric **** ton of work.  So sad Ford doesn't offer anything as upgradable being we are now in a tech world.

Anyone done this yet?

Looks like it's not too bad, but some of the parts/connectors used in that write up are Fusion specific.

This is what concerns me:
Note: All Ford Sync 3 (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) APIM's require custom As-Built Programming to the specific vehicle the Ford Sync 3 unit is being installed in. You CANNOT simply take an APIM from one Ford vehicle model and put it in another without first having it reprogrammed. Otherwise loss of vehicle features and/or DTC's will result. This is NOT something that can be done with Ford IDS.

True, and good catch.  I wonder how specific it needs to be - i.e. down to the right engine, heated seats, etc. There will be Tauruses hitting the junk yards at some point and these will become available.  Or what all reprogramming would entail.
