Thermostat gasket

Flushing the coolant and changing out the old thermostat with a new motorcraft.  Closed everything up and i'm seeing bubbles and a small amount of coolant leaking out of the housing.  I'm thinking i may have put the gasket or the thermostat in wrong. 

I wish i remember how i pulled it out so i don't have to ask, but does the gasket go in first and then the thermostat go in on top of the gasket or am i doing this backwards?

BiGMaC is correct,install the gasket underneath the stat as shown below,also and preferably the Motorcraft sig on the stat should be at about the 6 00 clock position facing down,hope this helps any,pics below.  Z

Will just any tstat work. For example if I walked into autozone or orielly's and asked for a 160* tstat would it work on any vehicle like my SHO? Sorry for the dumb questions.

Don't think so... Honestly I forget details but there are at least 2major variations in how they actually work and then other minor variations. I think Mike B (EPP) posted pics and explanation somewhere here.

Weird.  At first I did gasket and then t-stat and I was getting a leak.  Switched it around and put the t-stat in first and then the gasket (o-ring) and the leak is gone.  It's sealed up like that.

Great to hear its not leaking anymore,some stats like the Reische 170 stat require you to install it around the stat but it varies.  Z
