Thoughts on Running Sport Mode full time on 2016 SHO

I'm having some issues with the shudder while in 6th gear in regular drive mode while it seems to run fine in Sport Mode. So I wondered if it would damage the motor and/or trans if i did drove most of the time in Sports Mode. I drive about 90 miles a day to work in DC mostly back roads and 2 lane highways with stop and go traffic.

I do have a 6/120 mile Ford ESP warranty so that would cover anything if it broke although I'm not looking to drive it hard and break it?

Thoughts, comments?

Thanks

No issues driving in sport mode, just might be annoying. I would take it to the dealer though to have that shudder looked at since you are under warranty. I live on the Virginia side of DC and recommend Ted Britt in Chantilly, VA if you need a good dealer.

How many miles do you have on your SHO?  If past 10K, then it's not even a grace period issue.  Very likely to be something to do with lockup function, whether it is programming or hardware.  BUT can turn out to be a PTU issue also, so keep an eye on that.  You have a good long warranty, and that is a great investment.  Is that 90 miles roundtrip or one way?

EDIT:  So MD.  Def check out Ted Britt Ford and let them have a gander at diagnosing the issue if you can.  Get it on record that this is an issue you are concerned about.

its 2 months old and I have 4k and its 90 miles round trip. I will talk to Ted Britt as i called my local Leonardtown Ford dealer and talked to the service Manager who we have been going to for over 20 years and he said they very rarely get a SHO in there so i don't want them to even mess with anything besides oil changes and tire rotation.

Thanks for all the help.

Also, just an FYI, the reason it isn't shuddering in S is that it is holding the car in 5th gear. In S it won't go to 6th when cruising, unless you put it there. I would be curious to know if the issue happens in the same speed/load conditions in S in 6th (you would have to paddle shift it to 6th).

So i drove into DC today in Sport mode using the paddle shifters and it still hesitated some in 6th gear but not as often . It mostly happened going up slight inclines and hills and i believe its because in regular drive mode the car shifts into 6th gear at low rates of speed anywhere after 40 MPH, in paddle mode it would not let me shift into 6 until it was around 49-50 MPH. So it keep the car from shifting which in turn reduced the amount of times the car would hestitate/shudder to only going above 50. When I was in 6th and i slowed down sometimes below 48 or so, it would downshift on its own to 5th gear.

So not sure what all this means but at least this way i can control it so it isn't doing it all the time and i can hit the paddles to downshift to 5th when needed and not have to give the car more gas as i would in drive mode to make it downshift.

Thanks for the suggestions, i will keep you informed of any new developments.

I hope you find a repair for the stutter that I can share with my dealer because I have the exact same symptoms.

Check for chaffed wires on the engine block. If I recall, a common area is several wires on the top right side. There is a thread here somewhere...

Otherwise, go by Koons Ford in Sterling and ask to see Allen in service. He used to have a SHO, then a Explorer Sport. He's a good guy. You should also place a call to Ford about the issue so that it is documented. That carries some weight at the dealer when they read the notes.
Your right, they don't get many SHO's in service, especially the smaller dealers.

(BTW, Koons fixed my issues back in 2011 when Ted Britt wouldn't. I even talked to Mr.Britt myself. Ford later apologized, said they had heard the same complaints before, and recommended I visit Koons. They applied some TSB's and been fine ever since.)

Good luck, and let us know what you find out.

Do you get a CEL when the shudder happens? I had this problem with my SHO, dealer first said they couldn't do anything about it unless it happened during a test drive. They later said it was a coil misfire, avoiding admitting it was an injector misfire until the 100,000 mile warranty expired. If you get a CEL and its a misfire, swap coil packs from the suspected cylinder and a good cylinder to narrow it down to injectors.
