Trunk Lid Rust

Noticed this issue during the summer. I had the seam seen in the picture which is now sanded and primered rust. It seems there was like a vinyl type caulking which i scraped off and sanded. I taped off the area and primed it with a spray can and then sprayed it with flat black. I don't have a current picture at the moment. I also used the holes to spray a bit of lanolin in there to help block any future moisture buildup. I spray a bit in there about every 6 months.

I wonder if the drains are clogged and caused your issues. 
I know there are two drains,one on each end of the rear tail lights which can get clogged and not letting the water escape.
If you open the trunk lid the drains are located right under each tail light,(right under the black plastic cover).or a bad Grommet. Z

I will check but I got slightly rear ended last May which required a new bumper cover and I had both lights off and didn't see any debris etc. I also have paint flaking off near the rear window on the underside of the trunk lid. I think they cut corners a bit on paining the "non visible" part of the trunk lid promoting corrosion. Funny thing is I live less then 30 minutes from the plant where all out cars are built, I should go over there and ask these questions lol.

Will try to wire brush it I guess and see if I can clean out all the dusty sludge in the center weep hole. Then try and fill the cavity with a rust converter. Prime and paint the outside again. I also bought some misc sizes plastic clips. I am doing to cap the drains which should still allow pooling water to escape but hopefully block the drag created air/water from going up through the drains which what I think is causing the issue.

Rust strikes again, I'll have to get a replacement lid to solve the issue .

Fluid film should stop the rust from progressing.  Not pretty, but ...
