Whats your take on Down Pipes?

I'm debating down pipes for my SHO. I just got my tune in, logged, and have been working with Torrie over at Unleashed (THANKS AGAIN!). I was hoping to get some input from everyone on their experiences with Down Pipes. I live in Ohio so there isn't any emissions laws or anything where i have to pass a test, so i'd be looking at the Catless Down Pipes.

Is the difference night/day in the performance? I know i've read that they allow the turbo's to spool around 500rpm sooner. I'll probably be running the factory exhaust for now, Might do the 3rd cat delete later. But i'm not really too interested in sound, i'm looking for more when i hit the gas i suppose.

Any opinions are appreciated!

In regards to power there is not to much difference between the catted and non-catted,and after trying two sets of DP,honestly would go with the catted DP for a safer and more reliable and trouble free system, just make sure to get new gaskets before install x4. http://www.tascaparts.com/auto-parts/2013/ford/taurus/sho-trim/3-5l-v6-gas-engine/exhaust-system-cat/exhaust-components-scat I got my PPE CATTED DP FROM 4DRHTRD,nice quality and couldnt be happier, just make sure to get a revised tune after the install for the DP,in regards to hp,figure around 20,and you will also benefit from the turbo's spooling faster with the added turbo sound, check out my video with the PPE DP AND CORSA EXHAUST https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUHqiVPFixU

I worked in final fitment of the PPE downpipes with Mike, Paul at PPE, and BMR last year.  We did multiple dyno pulls after each one was fitted. Fitment at Paul's shop, dynos at BMR.  Did catted (Magnaflow high flow cats), non-catted, and ceramic coated DPs all on my '13 SHO with stock tune for this and also did stock DPs... all same day.  For details of the process check out the "How To" I posted with the story of that day and a bunch of pics. The whole process and pics is here: http://www.ecoboostperformanceforum.com/index.php/topic,2054.msg28591.html#msg28591

Construction: PPE does an absolutely super job in all respects including ceramic.

Sound: Sound definitely deeper and more authoritative and still near silent when cruising, but remember it's a V6..don't expect 80's muscle car sound. A little more sound at moderate acceleration. I am talking cabin sound with windows up.

Power: max increase horsepower was 17WHP with non-catted, max increase with catted was 12WHP, ceramic coating is only aesthetic... A BIG note about power... dyno showed it, and I can feel it... The DPs caused the turbo's to spool about 500-600 rpm earlier (1500-1600 rpms now) in all versions.  Stock exhaust results in turbo spooling about 2100-2200 rpm... This allows quicker access to AWHP and Torque.  This effect really makes a difference on the low end power!  It starts earlier and nothing lost in the upper power band... Tunes can be modified to optimize these effects.  Both Unleashed and LME have mods for DPs. The car does idle a bit slower both then with stock tune and now with modded LME v8 tune...about 600 with AC on.

No odor ever... If you go noncatted and remove the third cat you will have that hot metal and oil smell..

Fitment is true bolt on. The trick is improve flow of course... the pics I posted show why

Install:  It really is best done on a lift, not only for install, but checking for leaks.

If you go noncatted save the stock pipes... any and all tuning for noncatted DPs includes turning off the O2 sensor in the passenger side DP which is done to keep from throwing a CEL (which will return even if cleared)... In an emissions state, at least AZ, they hook up OBD2 to verify that the emissions system is functioning... car fails if it's not.  This O2 sensor is part of that system.... even if you don't need the OEM pipes now, you may if you sell in the future

I did catted in black ceramic on 404 stainless (AZ is an emissions state).... I love them. I would not drive the SHO without them. Dealer does my service.. No problems with these Downpipes, Hotpipes, MDesign CAI.

Also I prototyped the catted pipes on my Flex compared to stockers with a cutout and they made the same power and felt the same but much quieter.

Since having my car at the dealer for a valve cover and a couple of issues updated, thought the car sounded good before, now with the issues resolved must say it has a deeper growl sound, must give credit to Mike.B 4DRHTRD for that bigger grin on my face than before, and credit to Livernois Motorsports for outstanding tune performance, cant wait to hit the track this spring, will try to post an updated video soon, sorry for being a little bit off topic, thanks,Z.

Thanks for all the input guys! As i said, this won't be more towards summer i'm thinking... but I'm getting the itch for them! I'm more of a 0-80mph guy. Don't take her over that unless i look down and go "oops, she got away from me again..." haha. So i like the low end pulling capabilities of this boat.

Those that run the catless pipes, I have a question for you; how is the exhaust smell? Is it noticeable, especially with stock exhaust and the third cat in place?

I have been running catless DPE for over 6mos and other than the initial "burnt oil smell" that any new exhaust component has I can detect NO difference in exhaust smell, look or amount.

They DEFINATLY add more low end grunt, give a bit more rumble as you give it the juice. I am VERY happy with mine...0 issues. I run the Livernois 4 93 octane tune 24/7...good stuff

I remember a while back reading that excellent writeup, were you ever able to perform the exhaust cutout with the corsa cat back, would like to do that on mine, thanks,Z.

The  cutout is built.... I need to go get it.  Been delayed by life events.... Not sure I want it on the car all the time, but still need to go get it.  Corsa is in the future as currently having true CF engine, fusebox, and battery covers made plus investigating design for CF front deck fascia in engine compartment.  I need a money tree!  LOL
