When the turbo stops working...

Hey guys so I had something real interesting happen to me yesterday on my way home from work. I was just driving down the highway hopped over a lane to cruise past someone and had felt the car downshift but felt no real power, this immediately had me concerned about my turbos. I had posted a thread before about my car feeling funny at idle like some sort of hesitation, I now think this is from the turbine not spinning freely. But after feeling the lack of power I let off and listened for the BOV since I had vented them and heard nothing I decided to slowly accelerate and try to build some boost and let off to see if I could hear the whooshing sound crossed my fingers expecting the worst and sure enough the sound came. This had me confused but still worried so I babied it for the rest of the commute, after getting off of the highway I obviously had to accelerate but still wanted to be gentle with it. I began to accelerate and sure enough I could feel it again I just wasn't getting any sort of power at all. I proceeded to baby it home since I was so close now and just as I began pulling up to my road I could hear the turbine rattling around. My heart sunk, I called up a tow truck and had it taken to the dealership this morning luckily bought extended warranty with it and they called me back and said that they have 2 new turbos on order right now and are not sure what all else may be wrong with it just yet but they knew that the turbos were no longer functional.

Bummer on part one... Not bad! On part 2

Please tell us about your car... Year, mileage, fuel additive use, tuning etc.  do you check for codes or datalog? If so have you seen any codes, especially under or overboost?

Maybe Ford policy to replace both turbos if one goes.... Dunnp, but wer both of them failed... Seems a bit unusual for simultaneous f allure.

Bad experience for sure ... but YAY for the extended warranty!  Glad they're taking care of ya :)  I'd find out from them though if they have pics of the turbos and why they think they failed.  The parts won't be returned to you (being warranty work).  Did they check the valves for carbon?  If the problem is upstream, that'd be good to know!

I wonder if being VTA could of escalated the situation in both turbo's being faulty simultaneously.  Z

It also sounds like you were in overboost condition which there are various causes for that, but you might have a PO-234 stored,(turbocharger a overboost condition) hopefully they will resolve your issues quickly.  Z

Yeah the NA Taurus is a lot less fun lol, but I just got it in there yesterday morning so I have not figured much out just yet. As for my car right now it is all stock I didn't want to void my warranty by doing anything real crazy yet and lucky I didn't. I run 93 Octane from the pump no additives. And what would under/overboost codes cause? but no I have not checked for any I am still new to turbos. I am at 71xxx miles right now I am covered up to 125000. Also with the VTA I threw the recirc hoses back on before taking it in because I didn't want to have any issues with it. When that hose fell off could you hear something metal on metal and my car was burning oil extremely bad when I turned it on before taking it in. I am not sure if it was both turbos the rep told me they had ordered 2 of them but after it was smoking it was coming out of the exhaust but only on one side the other had no smoke coming out at all.

Yeah the smoke wasn't my biggest concern it was all white so it was just burning some oil, but the metal on metal noise is what had me worrying. I plan to try to get a hold of them and see what they found out about it, I am always going back and bugging them to see what they found out. Lucky for me I have a buddy from school that works up there unfortunately not on my car this time, but am going to try to see if I can get him to keep sending me updates on it and hopefully we can get some pictures of the turbos after they pull them because I am real interested in what those look like and I assume you guys would like to as well.

This is EXACTLY what it felt like when this happened:

I would suggest you ask the dealership to watch the video and look at the clamp. The waste gates are opening because the hose fell off. Hence why you feel no boost.
And thank you for this video that is actually exactly what was happening to my car at times I never noticed if that hose was lose or off, and am sad that I can't check it now without the vehicle but I had the same fluctuation of rpms not as much as his did but a similar scenario and then the BOV's would sometimes vent at separate times as well.
