Forgive my ignorance on this. I saw a post on here a while back that explained but I cannot find it now. I would be installing an non PP '11 SHO. As of now, now immediate plans for downpipes. (California emissions), but I am halfway planning late this year or early next year to install performance exhaust. Probably use Corsa or have shop build custom setup.
But exactly what does the 3 bar map do?
Is it beneficial for those running without the downpipes and exhaust?
What gains would I see from it? If any?
And where and how to install?
Thanks for the help!
Your car comes stock with a 2bar map sensor on the top of the manifold. The ECM can only read up to 14.7 psi of boost. This is fine as long as you stay (in the tune) below that threshold. If the car is boosting over 14.7 psi the computer does not know to add fuel and can create a lean condition (not enough fuel) = very bad. If you want to make more boost than the 14.7 you need to upgrade to the 3bar map. This allows the ECM to see 20 plus psi. Some tuners recommend meth injection when going 3bar. So the 3bar map itself does nothing to increase power. The tune can then be set up above that threshold (via the 3bar) so then the computer can then add fuel and or timing etc for the appropriate boost level. Making more boost and adding timing = more power.
So generically speaking then, and to try and quantify, by simply adding the 3 bar, a revised 91 stage 4+ tune would/could take my car to 450 hp?
I know these may be wild numbers, just trying to justify if a 3 bar by itself is worth the investment in and for my scenario. Then where would I purchase a 3 bar from? LMS?
I have no intention of adding meth, but a revised tune and better exhaust are in store. Just time and money to do it. I currently have LMS working on some upgrades/updates to my tune to address some shifting issues.
