Spend the money now and get a winter set. I paid around $1100 for 18" wheels w/ TPMS and tires.
Save your F1 SuperCars for summers. The difference between an A/S and high performance summer tire is huge.

Everybody and their brother expects a Ferrari to dominate. What they don't expect is a Taurus giving said Ferrari a helluva run for its money.....When it's all over, spectators will be checking out the Taurus because it surprised the **** out of them and it's something that most people can put themselves in a position to actually own, and unlike the Ferrari, that reaction is priceless.

I went both directions - initially I went with 18" rims and Blizzaks and swapped the F1's out for 3 seasons. Its a PITA but when its snowy they are unstoppable.
Once the F1's died I went with Cooper Zeon RS3-A's and they are VERY good in the snow/wet and pretty damn good in the dry. If I lived further North I would still use the dedicated snow's, but here you maybe need them 5 days @ month and the rest of the time its clear and dry.
If you are interested in dedicated snows I still have my Blizzaks mounted on 18" rims - have tons of tread left, probably can work a deal.
