I have a friend that owns a rim shop and he wants to black out my 2013 SHO rims-what do y'all think about that fellas? Has anyone done this and will it look better than factory? I'm thinking the car might look a little meaner.

This fall when I'm due for new tires I'm going to get my factory rims powder coated black. My car is white, but black rims will look good on a black car as well. Black rims will go with just about any car.

Go for it.  I'm sure if you really don't like it you can get the repainted or trade them with someone.

Thanks for the responses-my wife is breaking my balls telling me she likes the way the factory rims look but all my friends are say do it! I think I would like them blacked out with a super gloss black so if I make the move I will be sure to post pictures. Tks!

Has anyone tried using plasti-dip or plasti-cote? I was considering this or paying the money to powder coat. But Powder coat is much more expensive and I would lose the car while the rims are painted and baked.

I used plastidip on my SHO rims and many others ! I personal love it because its easy to remove if you don't like it and I love to change stuff up. I had a cheap set of 20'' rims for my old Chrysler 300 (destroyed the finish with break cleaner while the rims were hot) so for fun I painted them white and after awhile went black. I also just finished my sho rims I wanted a gunmetal look so I painted them Black then added silver metallic flake but it didn't turn out so i painted over them with blk again.

Thing is though plastidip is great if your constantly changing the look or style of you car but for long term I wouldn't recommend. If you nick them with a wrench or breaker bar or something while removing them it may "chip" and start a peel spot. If you decide to do it you'll need to (depending on local conditions) respray them once every year or two. They are however relatively easy to clean and maintain rinse with soapy water get a microfiber or something similar and clean away and if you want a shine spray it with tire shine.

Side note- my buddy had his rims powder coated and i don't know if the guy just did a crappy job or what but the first tire change and the lip of the rim was chipped to hell. So just for the money of getting it powder coated I would vote against it and go with something cheaper but thats me I cant justify spending the money powder coating rims when you could buy some new ones and the color you want too

I'm seriously considering the dip on mine. Something about it just feels cheap/ricey, but it's hard to argue with the results. $1200+ for new wheels or $50 for some spray... pretty easy decision.

I'm another fan of the dip. I went with the "True Metallic" anthracite gray on my EAP wheels. I did the wheels and emblems in the same dip. There are more pictures in my build thread if interested.

Just Curious. About how many cans did you go through on your SHO wheels? I'm looking at doing mine and would much rather not start and run out... hahaha

You're pretty safe with A can a wheel but I usually get 5 cans to be sure . It also depends if you line up all four rims and do equal coats on each untill complete ( you may have to use a little extra paint) or do one at a time (1 can for one rim) your choice. But remember it's better having more paint then not enough!

Off topic... But I love the way the black-out of the window trim and the bright strips over your roof came out!  Grill looks great too.
