Black smoke ecoboost

Bought a used CPO 2013 F-150 recently. 57k miles. I noticed a few days after I bought it, when on the highway and flooring the gas pedal, a puff of black smoke coming from exhaust. Did this a second time to confirm. Same. Took it back to the dealer (had brake issues as well, but that's another story) and the tech didn't know why it was doing it. Is this a common thing with these Eco Boost engines? The tech seemed to think so. Admittedly, he said he didn't know a lot about them. Thanks

Can't say I have ever heard of that. I assume since you have owned it for such a short time you do not have a tuner. The first thing I would do "if you had a tuner" would be to log a run where you get the smoke then take a look and see if you can pinpoint what is happening in the log. From what I have seen they run a bit rich to begin with hence the black tail pipes, may just be a rich condition, is it just a short puff when you get on it, then it goes away?

^x2.  In addition, you likely would not know if it is tuned or not.  Hopefully it is not.  Check the exhaust also to make sure it is OEM and not catless or otherwise "missing" parts.  it is very likely the plugs have been regapped to smaller than stock gap, which would make the engine run rich.  Pull them, measure the gap, check condition.  If you don't have a raw fuel smell, we can probably eliminate injectors.  F150 guys like to "roll coal" where you see plumes of black smoke when accelerating ...

Any performance issues other than the black smoke?

This happens to our '13 EB F150 from time to time and it's tuned (also did it stock).  I personally don't think it's anything to be seriously concerned about as we've never had any issues.

I see timing retard a bit when I first romp on the gas, perhaps in some ecoboost setups it runs super rich for a short moment?

Intake valves get very dirty being a gtdi. Flooring it is just giving it the old "Italian tuneup".  Unless it last for more than a few seconds it's nothing to worry about.
