Cold start rattle - timing chain / phasers

How many have had this cold start rattle? I see that all 3.5 ecoboost engines are affected by this (goes all the way through 2015) and curious what you owners here are seeing. The TSB for this shows new timing chains and phasers... and the original phasers were the root cause of the timing chain stretch.

I think most of the people affected are the ones that have holes drilled in their intercoolers
That is completely incorrect there's a known issue on the trucks with the timing chains.
Just FYI.

The issue is not as prominent on the transverse engine, but timing chain stretch has happened from time to time.  Run the right filter and oil viscosity to prolong phaser life.

There have also been some intermittent issues reported by members with this related to oil viscosity and some with tensioner malfunction. No problems for me so far. I also wonder if the injectors could be making the noise based on reading about GDI.

Mine has done this since it was 2 yrs old. Getting worse with time. I'll take it to the dealer sometime before my extended warranty is up.

I'm not quite sure why three threads have been locked, but do see that the same topic has prolonged and escaladed throughout multiple threads and respect the decision to do so and certainly seems like a wise approach, great job.  Z    :thumb: :thumb:

Just curious, what kind and weight of oil are you running?

I've tried 5W-30 and 5W-20, synthetic and synthetic blend. No difference.
First 60k miles, changes were done at the dealer with blend.

Mine does It too, no particular time or situation.  I have run 5w30, 5w20, and 10w30.  Royal purple tends to do it less. I'll try amsoil next I guess.

I switched to Amsoil, no difference.

Should be 5w30 for the 2013.  Make sure that's what they are putting in too.  A lot of dealers use "bulk bins" for oil, and you don't really know what's going into your vehicle's engine.

I guess sticking with the oem Ford FL-500S oil filter along with a Full synthetic oil will ultimately be the best choice for your vehicle, found a comparison study which shows the Ford oil filter being less restrictive and providing a better flow rate, pics below of the Motorcraft oil filter in the middle, think its a Fram oil filter next to it.  Z

I agree with the filter part but I wouldn't use Ford oil in my lawnmower.
