Cold start rattle?

Anyone else have this? on a cold start I get a slight "rattle" for a second. Definatly on pass side. Had wife start it today with my face buried on motor. Almost sounds like the throttle body. I saw a post on the Flex forum that said they were replacing the long block :o :o

Well that makes me feel better !! Would those be the same on a NA 3.5? Wife's Explorer dont do it. Wonder why he's gettin a long block

What oil & filter do you use on the Flex?  If using non-Motorcraft filter, switching back to Motorcraft may solve the rattle issue.

It may sound silly, but check your heat-shielding around youe exhaust.  My truck had a rattle on start and it was from a piece of shielding rubbing a downpipe.

I have this issue also. Anyone else ? I saw videos on Youtube saying EB F150's having timing chain stretch ???

I ran a Purolotaor Gold oil filter, and put a Motorcraft in with no changes.

I'm at 50K miles - 40K tuned my SHO otherwise operates and runs perfectly. Running Mobil 1 extended performance full synthetic oil.

I have a same rattle for 2_3 sec. Pin pointed it to down pipe location. I'm not sure if it's a shield around that area, but it seemed like it was coming from a flex pipe.

I hoped for an exhaust rattle too, but how can you tell is actually coming from the exhaust and not something else near by ?

I have something similar as well. Figured since I just had the car at Ford for an oil change they would have noticed it if something was wrong.....So I don't pay it much attention.

i have as well & like painter said, it's definitely coming fro engine on passenger side. & wicked I think your giving the dealer more credit than is due. maybe you got a good one, but the ones in stl only do what you tell them & don't look for things wrong. I think in the old days dealers did more of that as warranty work keeps their people busy, but seems maybe ford & maybe the rest are cracking down on that to keep profits up. especially with all the recall work going on.

I'm pretty sure it's the timing chain tensioner, I thought I read somewhere the new 5.0 was having the same problem. Sounds exactly like my Wife's old 02 4.0 Explorer with the bad chain rattle at startup

For the thread that's going right now.

Couldn't copy link from phone for some reason, so I had to start thread to share.

Could be moved to current thread on this topic... ;)

Oh wow. That's nasty sounding.
Sounds like the timing chain slapping against the VC or something. Definitely the timing chain. It goes away quickly as the chain tensioner begins to make up the slack once it is started.
