getting serious now..Whats behind the front wheels FORWARD plastic guard?

After looking at older logs today I discovered I ran a un-official non-track 12.66 to 105mph on pump gas so now I am VERY serious about dropping engine bay temps, coolant temps and cylinder head temps.

All of my other logs put me above 13.xx times.. with 230f+ in the cylinders, 130-160f+ IAT2 despite sub 60f ambient air.  So heat soak is MURDERING this car...

A older trick back in the day was to cut downward angled vents into the front wheel plastic guards to remove heat from the engine bay.  So what is behind that front wheel forward section weather guard on our SHO's?

I hate the idea of doing the 170' thermostat. but i think i will just have to suck it up and do it .. but for now if i can vent more hot air at lower speeds i'm going there 1st.

Thoughts on what is behind the plastic wheel liner is it engine bay or sheet metal?

ideas besides cutting holes in the hood to lower engine bay temps ?

Here are pictures I have there really isn't much some sound deadning
https://goo.gl/photos/XGCeHsZFxjgm1MB46 id love to see what you do I wanna make a race inspired body kit for the car kinda taking some inspiration from the fully body kit for the brz I can't find the pictures online but last months dsport or superstreet think they both have it actually might be the Ferrari swapped brz https://www.google.com/search?q=ferrari+brz&safe=off&client=ms-android-google&prmd=sinv&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiV2K-8uujTAhWJMGMKHSGvC-AQ_AUICigC#imgrc=ngbZMdhts84tlM:

good shots both of you guys!  thanks ...  looks like there is little exposure to the engine bay.  not drilling holes in the sheetmetal.

What are you doing for Air Intake,
may i ask

based on reviews here,  leaving it oem.  It seems that the massive intake mods do not really deliver that much more over stock.  I *AM* however pondering plumbing the snorkel and moving the inlet elsewhere away from the block.  But that is in its infancy as a idea especially since i will likely screw-up putting the front of the car back together :P

what got this started was my very last datalog.  I ran a best of 4.58 0-60 on pump 92 gas.  the IAT2 showed 92f and it ran like a madman. *BUT* it spiked HUGE knock (6 points) on 3rd gear... I was like WTH?

then it hit me.. like AJP mentions elsewhere while IAT2 temps are critical.. the block and cylinder temps are also equally important.  I think I ended up with bad knock in gear 3 because the engine temp and cylinder temp were too high to support the spark being commanded by the tables despite super low IAT2 of 100' mid run. (19.5 spark avg for gears 1&2 , e10 pump-92)

Hence now.. ''how to i remove more heat'',  not just for the IAT2.. but for the whole block.

I will do the 170' R thermostat.  i don't want too because the burping is hilariously tedious.. but i think it will actually help now.

edit wrong spark number..

Sorry upside down photos bug me and figure I'd brighten them up too

Old trick is to raise the hood. You can add spacers or washers to the hood mounts to vent out the air. Though I imagine it would look a little awkward on our platform. You can also remove the weather strip to vent some air out

Yup I removed the lower weather strip but kept the top one a day removed the back one as well as the splash guard for now.
