Hood vibrating at "highway speeds"

Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem before... While driving down the highway I noticed that my hood was vibrating pretty badly, mostly toward the back near the windshield anytime I was going faster than around 75 mph. Around 80-85 it gets really bad.. The first time I noticed it I pulled over on the side of the highway to make sure the hood was closed and latched properly, it was. Its not all the time, but its very annoying when it happens.

Yep. But in excess of three digits.

This was talked about by me, couple of years back.

If you've removed under belly pan(s), particularly the larger one under engine, replace it.

Attempt to replicate condition.

Definitely check the pan.... I have no vibration of the hood with the speedo buried... If it's not the pan something is wrong in the hinges/ adjustments...

Ill try to take a video of it tomorrow, its bad enough to make me nervous that I'm about to get a hood through the windshield. All the plastic under the car is intact and secure, so its not that.. I have taken 5+ 800 mile road trips with the SHO and have never seen this happen until recently..

I really can't take it to the dealer and expect them to replicate it.. "ya, so when Im doing 20+ over the speed limit on the highway, the hood shakes".... I've checked the hinges and latches, all secure.

jd... interstate speed limit is 75... 10 over is what everyone drives out here at least... just tell them.  We did on a tire vibration at 80-85 on our F250.... got a new set of tires and no questions... dealer did all the tire warranty and negotiation work too!.  No IH close so we had to drive it with them in the truck to show them....

Make them fix it!

I thought 85 was the speed limit in KY back in the '80s.  I had to speed up just to keep pace with traffic, and that was in the right lane.  Cops were passing us in the left lane!

At least on the f150s, have heard the fasteners on the belly pan can fall off/come loose.

Its a problem with the SHO as well ... the clips in frame are chincy , had to replace two of em .

My hood shakes a little regardless of whether I have the weather stripping under the hood or not.  I leave the back off around the cowl along with the engine cover myself.

Interesting to read these reports... i'll have to look closer...
but I have been unaware of any hood vibration or visible lifting from 0-buried speedo... if the bottom plate is installed.
9400 miles on the retainers for the bottom plate... multiple R&Rs! (up to 6 in one day)... still tight and not problems.

+1 I have not noticed any vibration from the hood. I know that my bottom plate is not that tight either. But I will pay more attention next time I'm above 75

found the culprit causing my hood to shake above 80... My girlfriend took my car in a while ago to get the active cruise looked at (another story itself) and it seems the dealer neglected to fully secure the air dam that is bolted to the bottom/back side of the front bumper... as a result, the bumper now has 2 broken tabs and the unfastened air dam is cracked in a couple places. I swear, the more "right" I try and do for this car, the worse my luck gets! I searched wide and long for a SHO with low miles AND a warranty, didn't get a great deal on the car cause it was "the one" I wanted and had the 100k warranty so I justified paying more... Now I have a car with a broken front bumper, NO CRUISE CONTROL, a shaky hood that prevents me from driving at more than 80 mph and it has now developed a weird hesitation at part throttle. Ford claims they cannot replicate the hesitation, even though they rendered the cruise inoperative they say its not their responsibility to fix it..... WTF did I buy a warranty for?

Try a new dealership.

Call this number and ask for your regional service manager. 1 (800) 392-3673

I had a go around with my dealer, not only were they 4.5 hours away so i couldn't be there to watch every move, they pulled several fast ones on me. From adding their **** warranty on the bill ($3600) without telling me, they did the fuel pump recall on the car and caused over $4200 in damage to the car. ( they broke the tank fittings, evap system hoses, rear seat, fuel pump was cracked form being dropped, and the o2 sensor wire was cut clean off.)

I drove the car for 3000 miles and waited 6 months for anything to get done. Since there was never a fault code they would never fix anything. I drove this car into the damn mountains and about got into a wreck because it would die on my half way up a pass. I finally drew the line when i came out to my car sitting in a puddle of gas. Wasn't a little pomeranian sized piss either.. this was a full on dump from an elephant. I called that number and talked to my regional manager and the car was fixed in 6 days. She also gave me an extended warranty for free. Additional 75k miles and 5 years on everything. Made me feel like someone actually cared still.

Best of luck!

I know that on my ford-trucks.com site, there is a service rep (Crystal) who has helped folks immensely on repair issues.    Perhaps I can invite her over here??    She asks (via PM) for VIN and contact info and can usually help a ton.

It'd be great if she has the bandwidth to do so, Mike!  By all means, ask her to come on over :)

trying to sort it out with the dealer right now, I got the "Ill have to give my manager a call and see about that" when i called yesterday. If i don't get some satisfaction with the dealer directly, Im going to call and get it sorted out with someone a little higher up.
