Ice and AWD

We all know AWD doesn't help on ice; so let's not begin to bantering this.

Last night I went out to a straight road across from the apartment to test the AWD; I was wanting to see how/what happens when the rear end disengages from too much torque. Now I'm questioning this because technically on ice, you're spinning--so is torque really being put down, or does the car calculate torque and shut down;;how does that truly work? That is the question I pondered.

From a stop, I hit it -- I spun all 4 tyres for quite some time; I don't recommend doing this because I was sliding all over the damn place. I didn't sense the rear end disengage but for all I know it may have. I had the car in track mode with everything turned off.

I do know the car does run FWD period; at back of that road is a huge parking lot that was iced over a bit so I did a 180 degree turn and when I took off it was more like a FWD slide (if you've driven FWD you know it doesn't really whip around due to zero power in rear). As soon as front started spinning I felt the rearend kick in and instantly my arse was flung around fast like a RWD.

Interesting experiment I must say; got a little hairy in a few places as doing things on ice is pretty much a "hope to the stars you don't slide into something". LOL

We did get about 7"-8" of snow on Friday and we are slated for more on Sunday and Monday. The SHO is definitely handling very nicely with the DWS tyres on it and the AWD system--it's just different when you come out of a turn and you start spinning and the rear end kicks in and somewhat jerks the butt to a side.

I understand the nature of your experiment.. and now you know!

... I do this type of stuff too, but isn't it the reason the "wet paint" sign doesn't work... LOL

turn off the traction control i find it feels much more stable and predictable. I have tons of snow all the time you'll find the rear wheels kicking on and not turning off. when i first drove in bad weather i felt it was a less control then just FWD cause it was so unpredictable.

I did, it was in my original post.

I have the PP and I call it track mode. Because that's what it "technically" is since I can turn everything off.

Sent from my mobile, I think.

what other modes are there with the pp ?

The non-PP can only disable traction control.

The PP can disable the whole advancetrac system for when you are at the track.

i wish i could track my car they bulldozed the only one in my city there so any racing up here they would rather people do it in industrial parks..

I want to get on road course this spring to see how she handles. I did run her at track and best I pulled is in my signature.

I'm at 370awhp with my mods.

The car is fun, but it's heavy as hell. I got it for the luxury, engine, awd, and the fact it's rare here.

ive counted 5 SHO's since i bought mine over half a year ago and probably just over 20 taurus's in general. I love how its a rare car. I drive around 8-10 hours a day 5 days a week all over my city so thats pretty good. its pretty ez to spot this bull lol It does make me worrie though cause i cant even find a taurus at alot ford dealerships its kind of sad.

Not too mention that the advertising for the Taurus has also taken a noticeably marked downturn in recent years.

I'm just hoping that the more recent quiet concerning the SHO is due to the Mustang anniversary.

In Ford's cycle there should be major changes in the car for 2015 or 2016..... we'll see if they continue active development, or leave it to us!

I think the Taurus is going to be under sold and fade in sales.  I hope the 2016 changes things, but as a fleet vehicle, I hear the police are changing to the utility (explorer) now because of space.

I still wouldn't change my choice for the SHO as I think it's the best all around car for the price.

Still love my SHO.

Not too sure about that.  I'm seeing more Taurus cruisers lately and have yet to see the new Explorer as a cruiser.  I believe that we are ordering 3 Taurus with the ecoboost in a few months.

my city just picked up a crap load of taurus's. they dont have the ecoboost though they got the 3.7 litre. i believe they have a 50/50 mix of taurus/explorer

Here in Dearborn they're using 2013+ completely blacked out Taurus' as cruisers, there are also a couple with badges.

The fact that the 2015/16 EcoBoost MKS is getting a refresher I highly doubt they're going to kill off the Taurus, as they have always shared platforms. If this stays true then, well, the specs on the next MKS EcoBoost are a 2.9L V6 TT with a 9-speed trans.

A lot of police cruisers and pursuits in the Denver area too.  Daughter's boyfriend is PD and has a 3.5EB Expedition.
