More Torque!?!

I was talking with a friend of mine who just got a brand new F150 Ecoboost and come to find out that he has way more torque than the other Ford/Lincoln vehicles with the same engine. 

What gives? I looked all over the inter-web and could not find anything definitive as to why the same engine in his F150 gets more torque than the one in my SHO. Is it a different Ford tune, different engine bits...??

Can anyone shed some light on this because I sure would love to have that much more torque in my stock SHO!!  ;D

There are a lot of difference between both motors. The truck engine runs different turbo's and are slightly bigger and truck engine has all forged internals the SHO does not. But with tuning and mods your SHO can develop well over 500Ft lbs of torque.

There are a few things that are different between the sho and the f150. For one there hpfp is supposed to be different. I would assume gear ratios and other trans components are very different as well afterall they are ment for a different kind of load and stress then a sho will ever see

Well I looked up the part numbers at work and the pistons are different but the rods are the same number. This was for 2012

I was not aware that the internals were different. I do know that the F-150 ecoboost motor has Ti-VCT (Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing) and the SHO ecoboost motor only has Single VCT =(

I wish the SHO was Ti-VCT, I think the car would get better economy, as well as, have a little bit more power or torque. I'm sure that the trucks have a camshaft grind that benefits the torque numbers also. 

I read an article somewhere that basically said that the only thing that the 2 motors had in common was the 3.5L size. I guess they were wrong if they both have the same rods. Lol.

With regards to the forged internals, if the rods are the same, what are the differences in the pistons?

Pistons are forged as well, note call out number and part no are 2 different numbers. Fordparts.com rarely list actual part no. As to Ti-VCT on SHO I thought I looked into this before and memory serve me correctly I found nothing that said it didn't have Ti-VCT.

Ok searching the part catalog it clearly states VCT, I guess my memory aint what it use to be :'(

To bad these motors are so expensive, I could see building a kick as hybrid out both engines.

The transverse has the same bottom end, 6 bolt mains (I've hard 4 and 6 bolt from different sources) and same rods. Truck has better pistons but you can buy forged pistons from multiple places now.
The outside of the block is entirely different so you can't just drop a truck block into a car, won't work.

Before I read it in the article, I noticed that the F-150 has 2 VCT Solenoids / Cam Phasers on each valve cover, where as the SHO only has 1. This was right after the BOOM of the 5.0 Ti-VCT dropped, so I was quite interested.

After looking at the photo you posted, it would appear that the main caps each have 4 bolts and 2 side bolts / jack screws just like the cobra mains. Wouldn't you agree?

Yes, I believe they are "6 bolt" mains.

Well... I have always called them 6 bolt mains in the cobra motors, but when discussing the topic with reputable engine builders they always seem to correct me :angry1:

4 bolts + 2 side bolts = 6 bolt main caps in my opinion  :biggrin:

Wow! I never realized that there were so many goodies in the F150 engine.

I wonder why some of those bits never made it into the SHO engine. Dont get me wrong, i love my SHO, but I would think for a high end car, it would get some of the better parts.

Now, I need to find a donor F150 so i can throw it's Ecoboost engine into one of my project cars! 

Oh, the possibilites!!! ;D
