PPE Catless Downpipes: Smoking Exhaust

Black99 and Vernon.... I'm curious as I am trying to get to the bottom of the smoking issue myself.. Do you still have the third cat on your car?

I'm completely stock after the down pipes.  So I'm guessing yes?  No smoke and she gets beat pretty hard.

Before install: no smoke
after install: smoke
stock reinstalled: no smoke

I wonder if the install was done improperly? And when the stock pipes went back on, whatever the issue was, got corrected. With it only smoking from one side I have a hard time blaming the pipes. With this things simply being pipes, there's nothing inherently complicated to them, I am also having trouble blaming the pipes.

I posted this in another thread about the smoking problem so I'll go ahead and post it here. The people who are experiencing the smoking, did you have the TSB done on the oil return line for the turbos?

That's what I've been thinking of actually, it seems as if the problem is delivery of oil to/from the turbo. In my opinion, in order to have efficient delivery of oil you need a closed, air-tight system as it is pressurized to delivery the oil. FMC faulty oil-return lines probably were either too small or not creating a tight seal and causing some oil to leak out (reason for the TSB).

As such, having poor oil flow to/from the turbo's could result in fried seals (which some people are seeing) or inconsistent blue smoking from the oil being burnt.

Thoughts on this?

I was thinking of this:

Code:
21930 3.5L GTDI ENGINES BUILT BEFORE 1/11/2010 - TURBO OIL DRAIN TUBE GASKET NO LONGER AVAILABLE - REVISED TURBO OIL TUBE AVAILABLE
FOR 2010 TAURUS, FLEX, MKS, AND MKT VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THE 3.5L ECOBOOST ENGINE, WITH ENGINE BUILD DATE BEFORE 1/11/2010, THE GASKET BETWEEN THE TURBO CHARGER AND TURBO CHARGER OIL RETURN TUBE FLANGE IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE FOR SERVICE REQUIRING THE PURCHASE OF A TUBE ASSEMBLY (BASE 9T515.) TO DETERMINE THE VEHICLES ENGINE BUILD DATE, REFER TO WORKSHOP MANUAL SECTION 303-01B. NOTE: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO INSTALL THE UPDATED AVAILABLE GASKET ON AN OLDER TUBE.
EFFECTIVE DATE: 06/20/2011

Code:
21759 2010-2011 TAURUS SHO, MKS, FLEX, AND MKT 3.5L ECOBOOST TURBO CHARGER OIL FEED AND RETURN LINE OIL LEAKS.
SOME 2010-2011 MODEL YEAR VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 3.5L GTDI (ECOBOOST) ENGINE MAY EXHIBIT AN OIL LEAK FROM THE TURBOCHARGER OIL FEED LINE AT THE BANJO BOLT CONNECTION OR THE SEAL ON THE OIL RETURN LINES. THESE LEAKS MAY APPEAR TO BE COMING FROM THE TURBOCHARGER ITSELF. CLOSELY INSPECT THE BANJO BOLT SEALS ON THE FEED LINE AND SEALS ON THE RETURN LINE FOR LEAKS AND REPAIR AS NECESSARY. CLEAN ALL ACCUMULATED RESIDUAL OIL FROM THE TURBOCHARGER V-CLAMP. DO NOT LOOSEN OR REMOVE THE V-CLAMP FOR CLEANING. TURBOCHARGER REPLACEMENT WILL NOT RESOLVE THIS SYMPTOM.
EFFECTIVE DATE: 03/01/2011

Blue smoke is oil, if there is not a good, sealed and pressurized oil delivery system then there will be faults. This explains why some people are getting turbos replaced and still seeing issues if the lines weren't changed, and maybe why some people are not getting smoking if their lines are updated.

From what I take from the recall, Ford got rid of the whole delivery line and created a new tube replacement. If we can confirm the people who are smoking out of the exhaust do not have the TSB done or have the older style return delivery setup then we can get one step closer to addressing this issue.

I was also looking at reference TSB-14-0113 manifold/header/muffler/tailpipe,some will experience an excessive condition of smoking engine oil and or oil consumption of oil from tailpipe during normal engine temp operation is another issue to consider.

i'm almost positive I've not had any TSB performed.  Have the smokers done anything to their PCV systems?  Mine is all stock.  I'm looking at a JLT seperator and a CFM valve cover breather.

but as of now completely stock.
If your thinking of a better-than-stock PCV solution remember your turbos and changes in pressure they create.  Check out RX Performance catch cans and Cleanside Separator... JimiJak is our local expert.  Tracy, the vendor , s extremely helpful and a member here... Aka tuner boost, shoot one of them a pm.

I'm looking to stay inexpensive.  I'm spending too much money on everything else.  Lowering springs, struts/shocks on the GTO.  Bought a used TVS for the Shelby.  Picking up a 93 L in Houston this weekend.  I think I've killed my money tree.

But also I was wondering if any of the smoking cars have done anything to their systems?

So we're the same.  Any PCV/catch can mods?  I'm stock on that front also.

No other physical mods other than the Catless-DP's, unless you count a K&N Panel filter as physical. DPs and Tune that's it....
