PTU service

No it did pretty well running off of shop air. My plan is to pump it out and refill as I did, drive it for about 500 miles, and then do it again. If it looks better, I might do it a 3rd time.

Oh you've got the 7300 that is operated by air.  I'll be using the 7400 with the pump.  Hope it works out.  I'll report back at some point this weekend to let everyone know how the hand pump mityvac performs.

Good luck, kolk, anxious to see how this pans out for you :thumb:  You are still running the "custom" ;) cats, right?  Hope you'll still love the SHO more than the Vette afterwards!

I had to do emission about 2 months ago, so the stock cats got put back on the car. I had the Catless ones up for sale on the local facebook group, but nobody cared. I might put them back on when I do the PTU fluid.

Just changed out my ptu and rdu oil in my 2010 mks for the first time at 65k.  I've got to assume that both have never been touched before.  Used the mityvac 7400 to extract and it was very easy.  For anyone struggling to get old ptu oil out with those cheap hand pumps, this is a pretty good extractor to use.  Sucked the oil up no problem.

The oil and sludge wasn't nearly as bad as i thought it would be in the ptu, but there was barely any oil in there.  I got out maybe 5-6 ounces out.  Refilled it with royal purple 75w-140 and got about 18 ounces back in and closed it up.  The job was pretty easy.  Lot's of good advice on here how to get to that plug.

It's been the trend that the PTU in the MKS generally will bear good results at the fluid change far more frequently than with the SHO.  Glad you got it done :thumb:

Second time I changed PTU fluid. so 25k - 50k results. Change it, change it often!!!

Doesn't look too bad besides being dark.  Dark fluid isn't always a sign that the oil is bad.  That's how mine looked when i just changed it for the first time, but a whole lot less than that.  Have you considered sending it off to Blackstone for an oil analysis?

I had my PTU fluid changed Friday at 60k miles. The shop used the BG service products. They had to flush it twice to get the gunk out. The gear oil was black/grey and had black clumps in it. The guys at the shop said they had never seen gear oil look so bad. The magnetic plug had about 3/4" of material stuck to it.
Was the first Ford PTU they had changed the fluid in. Said they would definitely recommend to it their Ford AWD customers.
I will have the RDU flushed next.

Mark... What magnetic plug are you referencing?... On the PTU? Did you install a drain?

On the non cooled (mine) one, it's the only plug there. Also had a large clump on mine.

Thanks Rich... I'm getting ready to do the PTU (after I'm walking) since I'm at about 24k miles.  I'm nonPP too... Gonna have to scope it out for that plug... Sounds easier than using the vent.

I guess that was the GAME CHANGER that influenced you to change over to (AMSOIL). is that right Rich.  Z

One of the reasons for sure. It's a sight to see the first time. You just don't expect to ever see a glob like that stuck to the plug...
