SHOdded OIL Specification

SHO, I went to the Pennzoil web site and checked out the spec's on the 5W-30 conventional oil that I am using and then I check the owners manual and I guess my question is that Ford's spec for the 3.5L V6 SHO engine is WSS-M2C946-A and the Penn 5W-30 conventional oil meets that spec. What am I missing here??

I think the point is you can do better than basic requirements... For instance in volatility, where Amsoil Signature and Pennzoil Ultra shine.

This is like having a JD Powers Initial Quality survey vs a 3 year Quality Survey.  Sure, at first, the oil meets the spec, works great, etc.  But as time goes by, the flaws in the oil are exposed.  Conventional oil simply does not hold up over time, even in naturally aspirated engines.  The oil molecules are not a uniform size, they shear more easily, and so the additive packs, which is what helps an oil meet a spec, get used up more quickly.  Won't see much call for 7,500 mile OCs on conventional oil, even on modern naturally aspirated engines.

Here we are talking about direct injected turbocharged engine technology.  High compression, reliance on the oil to cool the engine (which includes injection under the piston skirt) as well as the turbos (same supply), need for oil to flow through miniature passages in the block and timing components, provide a protective barrier in high g situations even if there is temporary oil starvation, fuel economy, etc.  Many shoes to be filled by just one oil.

And really, how much cheaper is conventional oil than full synthetic these days?  Much as I might not like WalMart for displacing mom&pop operations, you cannot argue with their pricing on motor oil!

Any way you look at it, using conventional oil in GTDI engines makes you pennywise but pound foolish, IMHO.

Dino oil gets very expensive when Ford denies warranty coverage, and they will.

Reputable establishments won't even do it if asked.

Yup SHOdded, I agree with just about everything that you say but I disagree with FoMoCo when he say's that Ford will denie warranty coverage on engine damage because of the oil that I use. Anyone with a 2015 owners manual go to page 362 under Capacities then Items for oil and specifications. You will see three small numbers along side the item Engine Oil. The numbers are5,6 and 7. For the explanation of these numbers you will have to go to page 364.
Number 5 say's and I quote:
5) Use of synthetic or synthetic blend motor oil is not mandatory. Only use fluid that meets Ford specifications. Motor oils of the recommend viscosity grade that meet API SN requirements and display the API Certification Mark for gasoline engines are also acceptable. Do not use oil labeled API SN service category unless the label also displays the API certification mark.

6) An oil that displays the API Certification Mark symbol confirms to current engine, emission system and fuel economy performance standards of the International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC).

7) Do not use supplemental engine oil additives. They are unnecessary and could lead to engine damage that is not covered by Ford warranty.

I'd call Pennzoil and find out what they say for OC intervals with the conventional oil.  If they say the oil can go 7500 miles and the engine will remain clean in our GTDI application with that oil, and are willing to send you proof of the same, then I guess you are good to go.  I know Valvoline says if you change with their oil they will warranty the engine etc.  BG has similar claims with their flush products.  Maybe Pennzoil has the same claim.  Ask them, see what they have to say.  Then post that info back here.  Maybe they will even let you talk with Shanna directly (that'd be a hoot), tell them you are a big fan.

I think we have reached an impasse otherwise, you have to decide what you want to do.  As I have said before, if you continue to use conventional oil, your OCI should be 3,000 miles or 3 months.  You should also periodically have a UOA done to verify that you are proceeding along a good path.

Pending information ...

BTW, the manual isn't always correct.  Witness the many PTU disasters, and many more in the making, while Ford ponders and labors over the necessity of it all.  Lifetime fluid, my a**.

I certainly agree with SHOdded and for a peace of mind have an oil analysis performed, think Blackstone is a very reputable co and certainly the "Proof is in the Pudding" IMO and probably be the best method to validate your concern's.  Z

SHO, I thought your idea of calling Pennzoil was a good idea so I called them and talked to one of there oil tech's. He said that I will not have any problems using Pennzoil conventional oil with Ford warranty as long I use the right oil weights. I then asked him about oil change intervals and he asked if the SHO had an oil change monitor and I said that it did and he said that I could not go wrong by using the monitor. I told him that the monitor came on at 6300 miles and he said that was fine but I could go to 7500 miles. He did say though that when the engine show's signs of using oil that I should no longer use the monitor and change oil more often. Like I said before the engine has around 25000 miles on it and does not burn any oil at least according to the dip stick so I guess I am good to go.  This form is great for discussions of this sort and I know oil is always one that gets a lot of play and opinions and I have learned a lot so thanks to all that have participated.
