Slow throttle response on Explorer Sport?

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forums and glad I found it. I own a 2014 Explorer Sport. Currently at 8000km. We've been having some power/boost issues lately then realized our CAC hoses were not tight. I only could find about 4-5 of them and couldn't locate the rest.

The power is a little better but still laggy. The worst thing is there is a huge boost/lag about 2.5 seconds or so when I press down on the throttle while rolling or on the highway. It makes it difficult to pass cars and merge. Now, I realize this is a turbo etc. But there wasn't that much of a lag before (even though there was a little bit). There is definitely less power than before even though weather is colder and I put 93 the other day. I had better power at 89.

My question is, is there an update or a reset or calibration for this throttle issue? Also, what else can I check to make sure it's outputting  the power it's supposed to? Thanks in advance!

Welcome aboard the E.B.P.F and welcome,the best advice i can give you is to call your service advisor and mention [PWS] service bulletin 360009 check to see if you have any codes,DTC'S and if you see po0106,po0236 some XSPORT may experience hesitation.loss of rpm,difficult in starting,lack of power,and running rough,if those sound familiar call your service advisor hope this helps and welcome aboard and post some pics and good luck.

Hey ZSHO! Thanks for the advice! I'm in Canada would these service bulletin codes still apply? My first new car that I bought so I'm not sure how this all works. I never took it in for service yet only for an oil change at quicklane (big mistake).. Do I just call the dealership, schedule an appointment and ask for any bulletins or codes? Thanks!

XSPORT call up the dealer and mention your symptoms and ask them if they are any recalls and TSB'S pertaining to your vehicle accordingly by vin number.

Also take a peek inside the intake and the CAC/IC and see if there's any oil accumulation there.  Don't want excessive PCV blowby.

I think in general most of us Sport owners biggest gripe is that asinine amount of turbo lag on the stock tune. Even being tuned its still there, but not nearly as bad as it was. I have definitely noticed it doesn't lag nearly as bad when you gradually give it gas instead of stomping it to the floor.

Do you guys have a "sand" mode available to you?  I faintly recall mention of that by a fellow forum member, and that it improves the vehicle's performance.

There is a sand mode, owners manual says don't use it over like 25mph or something like that though. It's good for launching but I wouldn't use it outside of that, unless of course you're in sand. Better yet just disable traction control and see how that helps.
Sounds like in general he's just having bad turbo lag. If you're not building boost and u lay it to the floor you will have a delay there is just no way around that other than either build up some boost or gradually give it gas

After an oil change, I did notice the tubes were loose so maybe they knocked it. Power is much better but still not as good as when I bought it. I gradually step on the gas and it's very slow then suddenly shoots like a rocket. By the time it's already been 2 seconds and cars have passed me. It wasn't like this before so I'm pretty sure it's not a turbo lag. Ford regional has contacted me and I have an appointment next week at the dealers. Fingers crossed. I want to mod this thing but not before the issues are fixed.

Try this.

Hold the start button without the brake until the engine light comes on. Do not start engine.  Release brake and press gas pedal to floor smoothly and release. Press start button to end run mode. Start vehicle and test throttle response

XSPORT there are turbo clamps which due to heat come loose,so essentially every clamp you see take a 6mm socket and tighten them firmly but not to tight,so basically throughout the engine bay and by the firewall you will see those clamps and sometimes come loose fron the factory assemblyline and there is a couple under the car by drivers side radiator those are the intercooler clamps.

I'm still sticking by my original post of it being turbo lag. I had tightened all of my hoses as well, but none were loose enough to cause any leaks and after tightening them it made no difference. The only thing that made a difference was a tune. Depending on where you live you need to see what blend of winter gas you have also, your 93 octane may actually be around 90-91. These vehicles have adaptive learning the way they shift and drive, changing your fuel type and the way you drive is going to cause it to relearn to adapt to your new driving style. I don't want to say I hope i'm wrong because I don't want there to be any issues with your vehicle, but to me it sounds just like plain old turbo lag on the 5,000lb explorer

The SHO had horrible turbo lag when stock also. Pedal to floor at a roll almost slowed you down before pinning you back.

Were the pipes directly connected to the turbos checked by chance?

Yes, sorry I forgot to mention. I did find a few clamps loose after checking the pipes after the oil change. I tightened them (really tight..bad? ) and stepped on it a few times and the power came back but still had the lag around 1-2 rpm but didn't bother me as much if you guys are saying its normal. I only located about 5 pipes though. I heard there were 11.

It seemed OK. Until today..terrible terrible power! It won't pick up speed. I feel the throttle is a bit loose under my feet and I can hear a "SHHHHHHHHH" sound as if there is air leaking. Is this how a boost leak sounds like? It feels heavy again. How often do these turbo hoses blow?

deff sounds like a boost leak. it really shouldnt make any noise unless you have a bov vta

yea now that you mention hearing an air leak, I mean yea I would assume its a boost leak. Your initial post sounds just like turbo lag though. As Jake just mentioned, you should not hear any air if you arent venting to atmosphere. Curious to why you havent had the dealer check it out yet? You don't need an appointment to have your vehicle checked out, especially if youre having serious issues with it. I personally would not drive a vehicle with issues and not even know what was causing it, next thing you know you will be out a vehicle. Go get it checked out asap

Can't recall the name of it. It is tubing that can be replaced with the hard pipe setup. This was going to front turbo (ripped section actually connected directly to it)from the air intake saxophone setup.

Edit: was told it's covered under 60k drive train. Minimum 7 days here to get fixed so I bit the bullet and did it myself ($200 part and 30 minute job)
