Smell

Occasionally, I will get a smell in the cabin that I have never experienced prior to owning this vehicle (It's pretty nasty). I'm thinking it's the turbo's dumping excess pressure, but on the other hand, wouldn't any dumping be done on the fresh air side, so why would it smell at all?

The first time I noticed this odor was after backing down from a hard launch at the point when it shifted to third gear. That happened a couple of times, but now, that same smell occurs even when under normal driving. Took it to the dealer, but because it happens only once or twice a month with no codes, they could not help me.

Any ideas...

If it is happening primarily during deceleration periods only....

I would check the main turbo seals.

And the most important question is................... What year/vehicle do you have??

Would help if you created a signature, with year, model, and mods. That way when you have a question you dont have to say...its a 13' SHO PP with blaza blaza mods

It's not from the turbos dumping excess pressure, that gets recirculated back into the intake plus that would just be clean, pressurized air anyway.

Check the piping on the turbos to make sure they are secure, in addition to turbo oil seals (as mentioned by BPD).

Hmmm...it was there last week. Anyways, '13 SHO

On the Flex we have CAT smell after hard acceleration, couldn't get rid of it with stock cats, PPE catted pipes I had no smells. :)

I have experienced this in my car as well. Just bought a 13 SHO a couple weeks ago. I have noted at least three times already that the cabin fills with a strange aroma after hard acceleration. It smells at first like a hair salon. And then kind of reminds of...maybe that tar like smell after you drive past a road construction crew laying fresh blacktop. Pretty damn weird.

I'm  in my 2013 SHO for about 10 weeks now.  Since this thread started I have pushed the car with some hard accelerations and 20-30 mile trips at 80-90 mph.  I just don't notice any odor other than the aldehydes from the vinyl gassing off like any new car.  Wonder if Ford has an engineering change of some sort? :hmmm:

On one hand, I feel for you. On the other hand, I'm glad to have some company on this issue. I have a feeling there are more out there. Hopefully, one of them is an engineer who knows the answer.

I had the same problem last week... First time ever... and then I realized I needed a bath!  It's TRUE... It's TRUE!!!!

Or... maybe it wasn't me... afterall.

Never experienced it in the SHO, but when I had my RX-7's I always had a smell like a chemical was hot when they were new...I always thought it was something used in manufacture that had gotten on something hot, anyway, always went away after a few thousand miles.

This is a very common complaint for Ford. They have this problem on just about every vehicle they make after doing research on it. There is a 50+page thread on another board for this very subject.
Ford has TPS out for certain vehicles but it doesn't actually work for most people and if the ride in question was built after XX/XX date it was performed during the build process and just did not work.
There have been many people try to get buy backs from this issue and Ford turns them down.
One fellow on the other board said he sued using the lemon law and won. No idea if that is true or not though.
From most of what i have seen is the smell enters the cabin via the recirculate on the ac system.
Everyone gets it after a hard accel above 70mph. This is a very common problem that Ford to date has not come out with a real fix for it.

The "lemon law" in AZ is pretty rigid... mostly just takes documentation of 3 unsuccessful attempts to correct the problem.
