Stone chips on the roof

Does anyone else get a lot of stone chips along the leading edge of the roof of their Taurus or MKS?  My 09 MKS had a few that were starting to rust a fair amount.  My 12 had a few and one was just starting to rust.  I used a Duplicolor kit to clean out the spot and then touched them up (wasn't quite the right silver, but oh well.  They are small spots.)  I don't want this one getting a lot of chips, so I asked my tinter if he did clear bras or vinyl wraps.  He told me to check out xpel.com.  They have an a-piller and roof kit for the MKS.  I just ordered that as well as the luggage area (top of the rear bumper.)  I will update after I get the stuff and get it put on.  I was just curious if others have the same problems with chips.  My other thought was to get a black vinyl wrap on the whole roof.  Thought it might look kind of nice, but for now I'm just doing the clear.

i'll be sure to keep a look out for it, since you've experienced it 3X.

i do remember when i took my MKS to about 135-145 mph on an open highway late one night; when i got home there were alot of bug splatters on the top of the windshield leading up to the roof.

seems as the the MKS' big silhouette cuts thru the air like a rounded brick (vs the square brick of the SHO lol) and the top edge of the front windshield and leading edge of the roof may be a point of turbulence/resistance...

Sorry, I misspoke.  I meant to say my 12 has not had.  I am on my second MKS, not third.  Still I find it hard to believe I got the only 2 that are getting these chips, so I would bet it's common depending on where you live.  Michigan roads are HORRIBLE.  We go through windshields like crazy!
 
Make sure any chips/gouges are repaired properly BEFORE applying any type of protection for maximum effectiveness.  Rust may not be apparent at time of application, and can continue underneath the protection.

Excellent point Manu!.... prep first so the paint doesn't peel in 2-3 years
 
YES!  I have four really, really bad spots along the leading edge right at the windshield/roof and they are definitely rusting.  The dealership quoted me $700 to fix properly and repaint.  They said they would have to remove the windshield too.  I like my SHO but coming from a VW, Ford paint is awful!  I don't think they could paint there cars any thinner if they tried.

K4.... Thin is right!.... averages about 3-3.5 micrometers.... The CQuart Finest coating I put on it is about 100x that thick... why I did it!
 
I just purchased a 2011 SHO tuxedo black from carmax, and I took my buddy Eric Witt that owns Tru Shine Detailing, www.trushine.net ,to make sure the paint was ok, and he pointed out there there were 4 nice size rocks chips in the roof right above the windshield that had rust that had started to bubble the paint.  He told me not to buy the car unless they paint the roof again, and sure enough, they painted it for me for free.  Rust is nothing to sneeze at.  If not properly repaired, it will just continue to spread and bubble under your new paint.  I would also recommend some sort of clear bra.  DON'T GO CHEAP on the clear bra.  SunTek, or Xpel is the way to go, but make sure you wash, clay, and polish your paint before you have someone put it on or else you run the risk of your paint not matching.  I suggest you pop over to his site, and check out his services.  Even if you are across the country, he has a massive network of people he can point you to all around the US and beyond.  If anyone contacts Eric, let him know that Curtis on the SHO forum sent you, that way he knows how you heard about him.  I hope this helps some people
 
A while back a friend of mine purchased a Nissan maxima at a sustantial discount,cause of roof damage,caused by hail,biggest regret he ever made.A little bit off topic here,SHO-TYM mentioned earlier what a big differnce with LMS tune,like BIG MAC always says add a 3-bar map sensor for 53.00 from Tasca ford parts and have LMS send you a new updated revised tune for the 3-bar and you will notice a bigger differnce,more boost.
 
My SHO has a couple along the roofline but they are getting fixed on Friday along with a couple on the hood and some other little touch ups.
 
My car too. And two rock chip at the top of the glass. 

Speaking of glass when I bought the car I paid 895 for a 5 year windshield repair and replacement. key fob replacements.  And they agreed to replace my windshield with OEM glass.... score..
