Wheel Hop?

Hi everyone. I am having a strange issue that just started. When I get on it from a stop, the 1-2 shift shudders or hops, which ever you want to call it. I've flushed the PTU, gear oil was black, but there wasn't any sign of metal on the drain plug. Flushed the transmission with fresh LV ATF, which fixed the issue last time I had this problem. Since it was still doing it, I decided to go ahead and have the front struts replaced. I guess it could be the tires? I'm at a loss on what else it could be. I went to the track on Wednesday and I'm running .2 slower than I did, so whatever it is, it's hurting times. Is it time for HR springs? Also, in my 60ft's I went from consistent 1.7x's to 1.8/1.9's again. It's like I'm back to where I was pre-Downpipes and E30. They did tell me the lower control arm bushings are starting to look worn, could this cause the hop issue? I've done everything I can think of that would be cheap/easy fix for this. I'm thinking something is about to go boom. Hopefully sooner than later, because I want to go faster and this is holding me back.

Any suggestions?

List of things done so far:

1. New struts up front and springs
2. Fresh PTU Gear Oil - Oil was oily and didn't look bad when I changed it.
3. Rotated tires
4. Fresh ATF

Could it be tire pressure? Maybe my tire pressure was a little lower last time I was out? I know that driving to Memphis from Tampa I got the low air light from the temp change is my guess. I aired them up and I've seen the issue since. Maybe I should drop a few PSI and see? Of course, this is just me talking out my @55.

Suggestions?

Is this with Brads tune or Unleashed tune? I had this problem with Unleashed tuned and LMS tune as well... flushing the trans helped a lot with fresh ATF LV... since then no issues. I do know when it gets colder out my summer max tires suck so they break loose really easy...

Brad does a really good job on the transmission tuning, so if its his tune producing the issue, i would send him an email.

I'm gonna flash it over to the Unleashed tune and see what it does. If it goes away, I'll have Brad look into the tune. He's a rockstar, so I'm sure he could adjust it if it turns out to be his tune, but since it was fine for a few weeks, thinking it's not the tune. Brad tunes are nice, so fast!!

Everyone should have a AJP Turbo TUNE!

I added an extra quart of trans fluid  and it completely solve my problem with wheel hop.
LMS posted awhile back about this, they said it was due to fluid cavitation from the sudden movement forward.

So I flashed to Unleashed and can report all issues were gone. I’m gonna email Brad and see if he can figure this out with me. What’s weird is it didn’t do it before. I’m thinking it is wheel hop now as Brad brings on the POWA Fast. Man his tunes are amazing.

Has the PCM finished relearning the tune?  Sometimes it is a honeymoon phase for issues, which reappear once relearning is complete.

Brad’s tune does it soon as it’s loaded. Unleashed didn’t. However, I’m thinking it’s wheelohop since the unleashed tune is 93 Oct and Brads is E30.

Brad makes the powa Fast and out of the hole. I think he will be able to help me. Of course, I should probably change those bushings soon.

Brad’s tune moves out!! It lights the front wheels up where as the unleashed doesn’t.

Ditto this one.  Brad's tune may be hitting hard enough to cause the cavitation while the unleashed tune is not.  Try adding a bit more fluid.

Add the fluid. Let the car learn the tune. Give it a week and of course. Lower your tire pressure. 26front 28rear seems to work for a lot of peeps.

I put in a half quart. How much more do you guys add? I don't want to over do it. When you check your dipstick, where is it at on the stick? Mine was right at the top where it says MAX just at the top of the XXX marks. Should I add more? Pending a response from Brad on my email. I'm sure he can work with me on this. He's such an amazing tuner.

Wow, checked my Tire pressures they were 37 usually run 32 or so. Dropped it to 32, all issues gone.

Tire pressure makes a big difference.  Lower pressure will usually hook better and reduce tendency to wheel hop.

By the way,  I would like hear opinions from transmission specialists or even other tuners on this business of over filling the transmission.

Here’s the thread over on shoforum.

I’m pretty sure it’s also on this forum somewhere.

And yes, Brads Tune brings the torque early! We had to dial it back a tad in the lower RPMs cause I was spinning all four tires out of the hole no matter how I launched it...

I cannot speak highly enough of Brad. Best tuner I have worked with out of the four I have.
