Half Shaft Failure on 2013 SHO PP at 45,970.6 Miles!!!

Last night I was just finishing up the last 50 miles of a 350 mile trip home in my 2013 Taurus SHO PP with 45,970.6 miles on the clock (No Mods), when I started hearing and feeling a severe driveshaft speed vibration under acceleration. For the remainder of the trip home I randomly accelerated to try and pinpoint the vibration and determine if it was engine, transmission, or bearing related. As I approached the end trip and usual interstate exit I slowed to a stop and then decided to accelerate with about half throttle to see how the vibration is at low vehicle speeds. When the car got to about 20-25 MPH I heard and felt a pop, the engine RPM instantaneously revved freely, followed by a wheel speed metal on metal chanky chank noise as my car slowed to an idle speed roll. After that, I believe the only thing propelling my car was the rear drive unit, which might I add would only stay engaged to about 1000 rpm due to the PTU’s electronic protection system. So needless to say, I coasted at idle speed the remaining .1 to .2 miles home assumedly using the car’s rear drive system. Currently, when I give the car gas the engine revs freely, the transmission shifts through the gears, and the speedometer climbs as if there is nothing wrong. There are no check engine lights and no other signs of an issue, other than the car not moving under its own power. I recorded a video and uploaded it to youtube, which I will post the link to shortly, to show what the car is doing. It seems that the front drive system spider gear has exploded, leaving the car with NO power to the front wheels. The car will be towed to Ford Service today to diagnose and repair the issue.

Please review this topic and provide any thoughts my issue.

Thank You.

Wow, that blows major chunks.

I can think of 2 instances, where tranny's have crapped out. Both were on 2010 models.

Not enough info was divulged (in those 2 other circumstances) for me to be able to offer an opinion to you in your own in specific case now.

Nor would it be appropriate (for me to comment) even if the info had been divulged quite honestly.

I can tell you though, your video clip is priceless, and I wouldn't be surprised if it somehow worms it's way up the proverbial FMC Corporate totem pole, to be viewed many a times over.

Sorry for all of the head aches this failure will inevitably cause for you.

I do hope you keep the community posted however, with any updates as to the diagnosis, and/or what steps are taken for the repair.

HAHA, that was a priceless video!

GAH; keep us posted on what happened--that totally sucks!

Sorry to hear about the trans, glad you made it home safely.  Hopefully you will get a drop in replacement and the techs will figure out if the problem was truly isolated to the trans.  Good luck!

That's a real bummer! Glad you made it home okay.  Hopefully they will get you fixed up quickly.

Man I thought I drove alot! Thats hell of a lot of driving to be doing in a short period of time, you get compensated for gas??!?!

Dam almost 50k on a 13.  Do you live out of your car?  LOL

Sorry to hear, but hopefully halfshaft would be lesser of the two.  How did you make it almost 50k without a tune....???

You are in a much better mood in that video than I would be after a long trip.  Kudos to you for a positive attitude.

I investigated a little more and realized that the cv cup backed off of the spline. Ill post the link below. I had to hold the camera the wrong way cause that's the only way it would fit and get that close to the action.

It didn't make it in to the service department today because I had to work. I also want to be there when the rollback comes to haul it. I don't want them accidentally messing up my wheels or car with their straps, chains, and hooks. It will be going first thing in the morning for a checkup since I will be off work.

2013 Taurus SHO PP with broke half shaft

Status update on the passenger side broken axle shaft…

Ford currently has the front end pulled apart and is waiting on the new axle shaft to arrive. The service writer was not sure if the mechanic determined what caused this failure, so I asked them to have the mechanic look for anything that could have caused this issue.

Has anyone else on this forum heard of this same issue happening to any other 2010-2014 ecoboost vehicles?

Yep I took mine in for it's free maintenance (oil chang and tire replacement) on tuesday.  they found the outer boot, right side shaft was spewing grease.  they are ordering a new shaft so I can get it rplaced.  the car has 7500 miles on it...
