LSPI.... lets talk about it!

So I recently was informed about this topic. Prior to being informed I had no idea about it. From the research that I’ve seen it appears to be an issue for today’s small displacement direct injected engines. Specially on today’s engines with turbos. I’d love to hear from some of the guys on the forum talk about their knowledge or experience with LSPI. I know engine oil companies are offering oils to prevent LSPI. But what else can we do to prevent this issue?

What would the summary be?
I'd love to see a simple "use oils with A and do not use oils with B".

There are is alot of information out there and some of it is conflicting.

A good oil is a must. I now use Castrol Edge.  Long story short, in the upper ring oil area, oil mixes with fuel and emulsifies.  That mixture is lower in octane and that is suspect to LSPI under certain conditions.  That is the main premise.

There is a fuel debate that perked my interest about Ethanol blends.  Some articles say all or nothing, and some articles say that E blends are good.  It all depends on what you are trying to do and your knowledge about these motors. I now am leaning against e30 blends for a couple of reasons, in favor of a high octane (100) low E blend fuel.

I wasn’t running a E blend. Just straight 93 with methanol when my engine blew.

Sorry to burst your bubble but Meth and Ethanol are both alcohol bases fuels and so technically you were.

Ok I didn’t realize that. That helps me understand better.

Will have to see what research there is on LSPI and methanol.  May not be the type of relationship we see with ethanol.  Also, since methanol is being dispensed in a port injection fashion, it is carrying carbon with it from the PCV system. So by at least using SN+ oils, you decrease the calcium content of the methanol+crud, but whether it is relevant in the quantities dispensed, IDK.

Can give me a quick run down of what happened to your motor?

I have been running Mobil 1 since I have owned the car, and I have changed it religiously every 3k miles.  I ordered an oil test kit and when I change the oil in the next couple of weeks in the SHO I send that out.

I will be switching over to Castrol Edge in the SHO.  I have already in the ST.

I started reading the articles I posted above and like I said started drifting away from the E blend fuels.  The publications say either very little E or all E is the way to go.  So since the SHO is only driven when I want to go and cause trouble, I have shifted to straight Sunoco GT 260 100 octane.  If I was going to go back to E blends I would want to be able to run at least E85 all of the time, and isn't common place on our platform.

Hopefully with the Castrol (which in my reading is one of the better GDI oils) and the high octane little volume E fuel my car will stay happy as I push it into the max effort category.

Here’s a little background on my engine. It’s tuned my Brad who I’m extremely happy with. My goal while building the car was 450whp and 500wtrq. So with the mods listed below (all expect the intercooler and Msd coils) I thought I’d be close to my goal. After 4 runs on the dyno the car made 433hp and 513trq. I was extremely although I was wondering what the car would make with E85 and meth. LOL... so on my way home from the dyno I decided to go wot at 70 mph. Shortly after around 90 mph the rod snapped and exited the block. I always ran Mobil 1 and changed it every 3k. But to be honest I only drive the car about 1000 miles a year. The new motor was put in February 2018 and to date I’ve only put on about 300 miles. I’ve always wondered exactly what caused it to blow up. I see guys out there make close or even more than me and no issues. Although I believe the max for the stock rods is 475/500 whp. Now I’m nervous to add the performance parts back on. My intercooler is still sitting in the box unopened for 2 months... lol

Scary stuff!  Its hard to know when you're making the right decision and taking the best route when the info is so conflicting.

Wait, you only drive the car 1K a year, and change the oil every 3K ...?  Not a good recipe for the engine.  Oil gets old just sitting in the engine too.

Since my mileage is/has rapidly decreased. I will change mine every 3 to 4 months regardless of mileage going forward.

I've always used Royal Purple but I'm open to trying something else.  For me I'll change the oil before I start driving it again.  And after 2k or so...and then right before I stop driving it.  Last year I did before..during at about 1,500 and then one more time before putting it away.  That was 3 oil changes in 3k

I would only run amsoil for the longest time. I switched over about 3 oil changes ago to Castrol edge. I plan on pushing this girl really soon on race gas. Castrol edge to me seemed like the way to go in my readings. Seems pretty good so far and it’s just as expensive unless you find it on sale. As far as changing it since I daily drive my car I usually go 3500/4000k. If I go to the track a couple times I like to change it around 2500 or so.
