Rolling drivetrain noise help...

Need some help here.  I own a 2010 SHO non-pp (does have 20" pp wheels) with 50k miles on it.  I have a rotational noise that is correlated to vehicle speed.  Engine RPM, nor gear make any difference.  Neither does hitting the brakes soft, medium, or hard.  It mildly resembles a noise you would hear from a bad tire.  In other words, it's frequency correlates to something round that would have to be somewhat large(er) in diameter.  It resembles a bearing noise, but a half shaft or a wheel bearing, I would think, are small enough that at 65 MPH, that they would be spinning fast enough that I wouldn't be able to hear the frequency; it would just be a continuous noise.  Where as tires/wheels are large enough that they will spin slow enough at 65 MPH for me to hear the frequency of the noise.

I rotated the tires with no change at all as well as verified tire pressure.  It is noticeable at NEARLY all speeds.  Below 15, it isn't frequent enough to hear it.  Going around corners the noise itself gets louder, not more frequent.  Turning to the right SEEMS to make it the loudest.  If I had to try to locate the noise, I would say it is coming from the front of the car.  I can BARELY feel it in the steering wheel when going around corners, and even less so going straight.

As far as the loudness of the noise?  Not very.  If you have the stereo on at a nice, comfortable level where you can still easily carry on a conversation, you can't hear it going in a straight line.  Around a corner, you can.

Lastly, I've owned this car since it had 37k miles on it.  I didn't notice it until about 2-3 months ago, which is about 2 months after I put Motorcraft front rotors and PFC pads on.

I'm sorry for the long post, but it's driving me nuts.  If you have any ideas, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Spenser

Also, my brother-in-law's AWD 2008 Ford Edge does it too....If that helps at all.

Sorry to hear that Spenser. But you and I are having the same problem. Your car sound like your problem is more advance than my car. I have 60kmi, I have PowerStop brakes and rotors(check good), It started 3 weeks ago, The sound is not as loud as your, It only in a straight line at 45mph and up to 65mph and goes away or the frequency get to hi to hear. I was going to dealer tomorrow. ANYBODY HELP!!!!!

Sure does sound like a wheel bearing...

Though, complications with the PTU seem possible as well.
I'm pretty ignorant around here still, but I have seen quite a bit of evidence to suggest the rather paltry amount of gear oil quantity in the PTU may contribute to premature degradation/break down of the fluid. Is it common practice around here to swap some fresh lube in fairly frequently, as a preventative maintenance?
From the photos here of the sludge found in some owners' PTUs, I would be surprised if they were making some noises!

I have this issue as well on my 2010. Only can hear it and feel it in the pedals barely when at interstate speed in a sweeping right turn. Goes away almost entirely in a left turn.

I had a similar problem to this.
Pulsing vibration would start around 55mph and almost go completely away around 70mph.
It ended up being the RDU , or rear drive unit. There are no serviceable parts in the unit,
it must be replaced as a whole assembly. Hope this helps.

What the hell is an RDU? Did it vary with turning at high speed at all?  I also have a squeak coming from somewhere, and my rear left wheel hub is harder to turn by hand than all the others

Sounds very similar to an issue found in nearly all Mazdaspeed6s -  the rear differential in those cars makes a harmonic drone noise, present from about 55 to 70 mph. AFAIK, there was never an official fix from Mazda. Mine always did it. It appears normal for the unit, in retrospect. However, ride height and tire sidewall height made a difference, and it'd come and go, between my tire, wheel and suspension choices and upgrades.

The noise would silent completely, with the rear coupling completely disengaged, which could be done by lifting the e-brake a click or two, and activating the e-brake switch.

ANYWAY...Just something to think about. Apples to oranges, maybe...

Probably because the Rear Drive Unit (not the PTU) is acting up ... or vice-versa.  My car does not make any of the noises you speak about.

What was the price on replacing RDU?
My noise sound like it coming from the  front right tire.

My noise wasn't really directional, but it seem to come from the middle of the floor.
The RDU was replaced under the 3 year -36,000 mile warranty so I don't have a price.
But ford had my car for 63 days troubleshooting the vibration.

For those that have mentioned the wheel bearing, this will be my next part to replace.  The first time I heard it, I thought it was a wheel bearing, but I suppose I convinced myself otherwise.  However, I found a couple of posts on other websites claiming they had to have their driver's side wheel bearing replaced in less than 30k miles.  So this where I go to next.  I will follow up on this thread once it is rereplaced.

I have a feeling it's my drivers side bearing as well, judging by the noise and feel of it.  Can't wait to hear if that fixes your issue.

I'll find out next week.  It should be under warranty if that's the problem.
