2013 SHO PP Or No PP

foam steering wheels ?

I like the softness of the suede sections of the steering wheel but honestly it's a little too slick for something you need to have a good grip on. Feels nice though while cruising with the heated steering wheel turned on :)

not sure who has suede on the shift knob ?? mine does not.

Sorry... that used to be a CTS-V option... my bad

I prefer the steering wheel in the older SHOs, aesthetically. Never grasped one. I don't care for the wheel in my 2013. Doesn't fit the rest of the interior, and the "leather" portion is rather underwhelming.

The wheel in Mazda's new Skyactiv fleet of vehicles is absolutely excellent. Love it in my wife's CX-5. And I am a fan on the flat bottomed variety, found in some of the high end sports cars and sedans, like Audi's.

One of the first things I did to the car was get a performance wheel cover. It doubles it purpose to protect the Alcantara and also adds some much needed thickness to the steering wheel. I had my brother sit down in the car and thought the cover was actually the OEM wheel. Highly recommended and inexpensive mod.

With regards to PP vs. Non-PP differential gear ratios, how can a lower differential gear not help the cars overall performance? The only way that it would NOT positively influence ET times, is if the lower gear ratio option caused the transmission to shift into an additional gear through the quarter mile. Going from 2.77 to 3.16 adds .39 drive shaft rotations per tire revolution. That's like taking a mustang that has 3.31 gears and putting a 3.70 gear. The only way it can not help your ET, is if you can't get traction off the line due to gearing, or if the car runs out of gear through the quarter mile and has to shift an additional time.

I welcome evidence that the PP isn't faster than the Non-PP off the line or top end for that matter.

I would like to see evidence either way.  I'd bet it's very close. Especially if you are doing real 1/4's factoring DA.  Track conditions, etc.  They would have to actually run together and switch lanes and do a number of runs to really get the test right.

Then again, all PP's and all non-PP's are going to be the same.

PP haters lol !!!!!!!! retro fit all the PP parts onto the non PP cars all you want (if you actually ever do it) but, apples to apples there's no way the car with the lower gear is not going to accelerate faster. Plain and simple. My stock tires are getting warn at 20k miles and I have no problems with traction with my PP.

I wanted  PP car for the lower gearing and IMO added engine safety while beating on the car :)

And of course stock options can be over come by additional aftermarket parts. This post was meant in fun we all know all of these cars run good.........

some better than others :)

Yeah, I would have taken either one.  Didn't have the choice.  Either way they are fantastic rides.

Multiple drivers and model years as well as mod levels should be available in the group at the 2014 Ford Nationals.  On that thread a Friday night at the drags trip has been offered.  Maybe the objective info can be obtained if folks are willing to participate.

right on too many other factors taken into consideration when buying a car for most to only make the decision to buy based on the PP or not.

I felt like I just got lucky when I found mine sitting on a used lot with 8k miles on it. I would have bought it PP or not. Might have paid a tad less with no PP but once I realized it had it to me that was just a bonus, therefore since it's what I have it's better :)

Of course, lower gear will accelerate faster... At least when launching. But, if you calculate a 0-60 mph, my 2013 PP is actually slower than my 2010 non-PP even if on a 60ft. the 2013 launches 1.72 vs best of 1.80 (in average a full tenth faster on launches). The extra shift to get to 60mph makes it slower for the calculation of the 0-60mph. Also, I am pretty sure the top speed was potentially higher with my non-PP.

But the PP really launches faster that's a proven fact.

I'm not sure where one ends up RPM wise in the 2 vehicles at the end of the 1/4.  In my Flex, I have reduced my tire diameter to 27" from 29.2" stock in effect taking my 3.16 to a 3.40. Flex stock tires are 255-45-20's vs 245-45-20's on many SHO's.

I will say that the higher gear in non PP may hook up better when you add lots of power mods, so the real difference is negated.  But... completely stock, or with just a 93 tune, the lower gear means faster 1/4's. So many variables, stock tires vs DR's or just sticky aftermarket ones.  DA helps some tremendously.  Very hard to ever compare unless you had two identically modded vehicles running against each other like 4 times with lane switches. Even then the driver may make a difference.

4DR had even smaller slicks  on front of his Flex, and was under 12.1.  Had he been given a couple more months to get into the 11's, I think he would have been the fastest EB engined vehicle ever, even with the AERO and weight penalty.

take a 2013 PP and a 2013 non PP both bone stock, and line them up in a perfect world on the same track at the same time with John Force driving them both at the same time.

the PP will win no ?

of course there are always several other variables that will always come in, but all things equal the PP has an advantage to some degree somehow, somewhere :)

I would have to say that on a short autocross with a lot of turns, the PP would make better time.  As far as the 1/4 goes, it's really tough to say.  Like Steve says, if you can get all power to the ground, it will launch quicker.  How the lower gear effects acceleration at higher speeds and if another gear is necessary is the question.  Another question would be how the lower gearing would effect the power band through a gear and into the next higher gear.

@DJE624: Previously in this thread I posted a link to 2013 PP running a 12.8X running the exact same mods as you, tune, springs and CAI. I know DA, track conditions, etc, all come into play, but how did this guy do it when you can not crack into the 12's. You are up in Wisconsin so you have to see some low to negative DA's days. The only difference is PP vs. non-PP.
I will say that with the mods listed above, that the 2013 PP if the fastest version of the SHO. I will quickly change my tune if the numbers (time slips) prove me wrong.

Crash and I had a head-to-head run at LMS's track day. and it was real close. We have even same MOD's. Another different between PP/nonPP is a more stiff spring/bustings(Crash;s H&R spring)

@SRT OK.  He beat me.  ( I don't know what the DA was when I did my best runs but I have never seen low or negative DAs.) I'm not trying to prove anything.  As I inferred before, there are too many variables to prove anything here. But, if the PP is .15 faster in the 1/4, so be it.  I would still be happy with either one.
